Rose Curry Obituary

Rose Curry

Rose Curry (nee: Scudder), of Montvale, NJ, made her final curtain call – after heroically fighting chronic illness, and exited stage-left, on New Year's morning, leaving her audience clamoring for more. Her 68 year run leaves so many wonderful memories from cherished friendships and occasions. She made everything an event ("Make a fuss – he/she/they deserve it!"). Summers at the shore, birthdays(!) and anniversaries – and not just for family - to say nothing of Holidays. Life itself was a cause for celebration! The house always had fresh flowers from the many gardens she worked with the help of her grounds crew – her husband, Brian. If you knew her you knew the twinkle in her eye and the lilt of her voice, right Senior Club members? She will be missed, yes, but she will always be with all of us who knew her. Rose left her native San Francisco with the dream of performing on the Broadway stage, a singing, dancing, acting triple threat. And she succeeded! In the midst of her career, she met and married her husband, Brian, and started new roles as wife and mother, the roles she most valued. The determination and confidence that brought her cross-country to New York helped her raise three wonderful kids, with two grandchildren and one due in March. She embedded herself in the community: Adult Program Coordinator at both the Montvale Public Library (which is now named after her), and the Oakland Public Library; elected to Borough Council in 2012 and was reelected two more times (serving for 10 years); served on the Montvale PTO (including as President and V.P.) from 1990 to 2004; directed and choreographed after school drama (the "Backpack Players") at Memorial Elementary School, musicals at Summit and Pascack Hills High Schools and Don Bosco Prep, and "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" at Montvale Evangelical Free Church; volunteered time with the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Tri-Boro Food Pantry, and Meals on Wheels; received the 2021 Congressional Hometown Hero Award from Rep. Josh Gottheimer; member of Montvale Evangelical Free Church, where she served and sang, since 1990.

Rose is survived by her dear husband, Brian; their three children Sean Curry (Kelly), Evan Curry (Victoria), and Emma Downey (Michael); her two grandchildren Molly Jane and Anna Rose.

She is predeceased by her parents John and Frances Scudder and her older sister Ellen (CA), and survived by her siblings Betty Garthwaite (David), John Scudder (Judy), Paula Behmke (Bob), Sara Baldwin (Page) (CA), and William Scudder (Debby) (TX), as well as many Curry in-laws and lots of nieces and nephews who loved their "Auntie Rose."

The Scudder household was a great place to visit. I was friends with Ellen, but all the family was engaging and talented. I was in awe of Rose´s talents and she always said she would dance on Broadway. How great she realized her dreams! It seemed she lived a life of service and beauty in the arts and community. So long ago but still remembered That´s a legacy.

Such cherished memories I have of Rose, a spirited and talented individual. In childhood, I was privileged with many sleep-overs in the lively Scudder household. Rose was always helping with family tasks, caring for younger siblings, and ... dance classes! We had many walks down Irving Street to the Super X Market, carrying back groceries for that night's dinner. Together, we went to Mercy and to SF State. Rose is lovingly remembered...a full and purposeful life.

We are so sorry for the loss of Rose. She was an amazing person and touched the lives of so many. We remember her being Mark´s team mom. She gave him a gift card from the team to a restaurant in Nyack which became one of our favorites. We also thanked her for such a wonderful recommendation. She will be remembered and very missed.
