Roy Jay Abarbanel departed from this world on March 9,2024, in Tallahassee, Florida, surrounded by the melodies and memories he composed throughout his vibrant life. Born on August 4, 1952, in Hackensack, NJ, Roy carried the indomitable spirit inherent to his family lineage.
The son of the late Milton and Zelma Dobkin Abarbanel, Roy grew up in a home filled with love and a rich appreciation for his Jewish heritage, values he embraced throughout his life. His soulful journey began with his melody and was perfected in harmony with his late wife, Della Eleanor Shrider-Abarbanel, whose memory now intertwines with his legacy.
Florida State University first witnessed Roy's blooming talent, which flourished as he earned his graduate credentials at FAMU in Tallahassee, Florida. His professional life thrived as he dedicated his days to healing as a licensed Physical Therapist, soothing not only with medicine but also with his music, which was a balm to many souls.
Roy's musical prowess was legendary; the saxophone was his wand, and with it, he cast enchantments as a member of various bands, leaving his audience in awe. The rhythm of his life was composed in sync with every note he played, every patient he treated, and every life he touched, truly making music his life's work.
He leaves a rhapsody of love and memories for his children: Marcus Abarbanel, Levi Abarbanel, Trenetra Vaillancourt (Roland), and Delilah Abarbanel; his stepchildren, Nathan Rawls, Thomas Armistead (Melanie),and Nicole Robison, all of whom carry forward his cadence. His grandchildren, the twinkling notes of his familial melody, will remember their grandfather's tender love and lullabies. Roy is also survived by his brother, Andrew Abarbanel, and will be cherished in the hearts of many extended family members, including the children's "Manny", William Warren, the children's "Nana", Lisa Smith, and the entire congregation of Temple Israel, where he joyfully celebrated his faith.
Roy Jay Abarbanel's song may have softly faded, but the echo of his life's symphony will resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege of witnessing his grand performance.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate the life of Roy, on Sunday, March 17, 2024, beginning at 11:00 AM Eastern Time at the Temple Israel with Rabbi Paul Sidlofsky officiating.
In lieu of flowers please consider sending a donation in memory of Roy to Sealey Elementary School 2815 Allen Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312 a school that was near and dear to his heart. (all checks should be made to Sealey Elementary School)

Roy was a fighter, and a friend of friends of friends. Thank you for not including the unpleasant matter of causation for the idly curious. God bless America.

My condolences to my old friend Roy. We marched in the band together at FSU and became great friends. I on trombone and he on Saxophone. We had many great spring break times on Miami Beach and beyond. May he Rest in Peace.
