Carol Elizabeth Dunaway, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away on August 23, 2025, at the age of 82 in
Bascom, Florida. Born on March 4, 1943, in Atlanta, Georgia, Carol's life was a testament to her enduring kindness, her commitment to her family, and her passion for serving others.
Carol's journey began as the beloved daughter of Harold L. Conrad and Frances Gadd Conrad, who both preceded her in death. Her legacy continued to flourish as she devoted herself to her family, including her loving husband of thirty years, Norman J. Dunaway, Sr. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Carol's nurturing spirit shone brightly through her children, Julie Tindall and her husband Steve, Eric Gissendaner and his wife Darlene, Daniel "Dan" Gissendaner and his wife Nancy, and Jay Dunaway and his wife Karen. Her ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren will forever cherish the memories and values she instilled in them.
Carol's heart was large enough to include her very special friend, Inez, and her adored cat, Plunder, both of whom brought her immense joy and companionship. Her circle of love extended to many extended family members and friends, all of whom felt the warmth of her presence in their lives.
A proud graduate of Piedmont College in Atlanta, Carol's dedication to her education earned her an RN and BSN, laying the foundation for a remarkable career in nursing. Her professional journey was marked by a historic moment as she was given the opportunity to take part in the very first pacemaker installation in Atlanta, a testament to her pioneering spirit and commitment to medical advancement.
Carol's faith was central to her life. She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Chattahoochee, where she attended services whenever she was able. Her Christianity was not just a belief but a practice of love and service to others.
Beyond her professional and spiritual commitments, Carol found joy in life's simple pleasures. Her love for the outdoors was evident in her many excursions to the river to feed the cats, hunt for arrowheads, and discover old pottery. She was also an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan. In her younger years, she relished a challenging match of tennis, displaying both her competitive spirit and her grace. Carol's passion for the outdoors was complemented by her love of dirt road riding, an activity that allowed her to embrace the beauty of nature.
An excellent cook, Carol's culinary skills were especially appreciated when the smell of fresh-cut grass filled the air, signaling the perfect time for a family gathering. Her recipes and the love with which she prepared them will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of experiencing her cooking.
Carol Elizabeth Dunaway lived a life of service, love, and joy. Her memory will be treasured and her legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her. As her family and friends bid her farewell, they take solace in the knowledge that her spirit will always be with them, guiding them with the same love and compassion she showed every day of her life.
