Roy Ervin Cobb, Jr., affectionately known as "Sonny," passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on January 2, 2024, in his Mount Pleasant, Texas residence. Born on December 23, 1935, in St. Louis, Missouri, Sonny was the son of Roy Ervin Cobb and Mable Mae (Hallaman) Cobb.
A devoted Christian, Sonny served his country honorably in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957 and later in the United States Air Force from 1957 to 1961. On July 12, 1958, he married the love of his life, Joan Estelle Roberts in Duncanville, Texas. Their union was blessed with three children. Sonny spent 25 years as an electrician with Texas Instruments in Richardson, Texas, before retiring. In 2001, he and Joan relocated to Mount Pleasant, where Sonny continued to share his skills, working for a time at A-1 Electric Motor Service.
Known as the 'fix-it guy,' Sonny had an uncanny ability to dismantle and rebuild various items, from lawn mowers to clocks, always identifying and remedying any issues. He crafted intricate wooden shadowboxes for his wife and her sisters and fashioned unique scorpions from multicolored wire remnants. Sonny was a master at traditional brain-teaser puzzles and brought laughter to those around him with his sense of humor and playful tricks. Sonny found fishing all hours of the night out on Lake Bob Sandlin Pier brought him a great amount of relaxation.
Sonny is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Joan Estelle Cobb of Mount Pleasant, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Karen & Steve Frank of Queen Creek, Arizona; son and daughter-in-law, Kelly G. & Venus Cobb of Mount Pleasant, Texas; daughter-in-law, Regina Cobb of Red Oak, Texas; grandchildren and spouses: Steffi & Jordan Kerpan of Queen Creek, Arizona; Samantha & Michael Popeck of Queen Creek, Arizona; Brian K. & Jamie Cobb of Mineola, Texas; Jacob R. & Taylr Cobb of Keller, Texas; Liam Cobb and Kylie Cobb, both of Mount Pleasant, Texas. He is also survived by great-grandchildren: Joshua, Jaxson, Leah, Hannah, Stella, Tanner, Weston, Aydin, Letty Ann, and Jett.
In addition to his parents, Roy & Mable Cobb, Sonny is preceded in death by his son, Ervin Keith Cobb, and brother, Charles C. Cobb.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 5, 2024, at the Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home Chapel, with visitation starting at 1:00 p.m., one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Old Saltillo Cemetery, 664 County Road 3357, Saltillo, Texas 75478.
