Roy R. King of Manistee, Michigan passed away April 11, 2024, at the age of 53. Roy was born March 29, 1971 in Chicago, IL, and grew up in Park Forest, IL. Survivors include his children Morgan King (Matt Sadowski), Kaylee King (Jack Kint), Joey King (Victoria Englert), and Abby King (Joe DeSpain); his mother and stepfather, Beverly and John Olson; his father, John King; his sister Kim (Ray) Victoria; his stepsister and step niece Amy (Rodney) Smith and Justine (Marshall) Wood; his aunts, Nancy Farris and Wendy Schweinfurth; his cousins Rob Green, Laura Green, Elise (Charlie), Tucker and Gabriel Carlson; and precious Apollo the cat, now with Kaylee and Jack.
Roy was the Executive Director of the former Best Drug Rehabilitation center in Manistee, Michigan. Before moving to Manistee, past jobs included mechanic, over-the-road truck driver, tow truck driver and sales. While a mechanic, Roy would challenge the owner to a race: to add amounts for a bill, the owner would use a calculator while Roy did the addition in his head. Roy never lost.
During his time at B.D.R., Roy helped save thousands of lives. His phone was never off, no matter what time of day or night. His compassion and dedication to helping people with addiction was incredible. The position of Executive Director kept Roy busy, but he still used his mechanical skills to personally keep the immense building running.
When the COVID-19 pandemic shut B.D.R. down, Roy decided to use his hobby of rehabbing homes to start a new business. With DDIY (Don't Do It Yourself), Roy worked on improving homes while keeping the integrity of each home's history. He always said, if you want replacement windows, hire someone else. If there was something he did not know, he would spend hours researching how to do it. The saying, "I have enough tools," said no one ever, seemed to be his mantra. Roy also managed and rehabbed an Airbnb property on First Street in Manistee. He and the owners were close friends and he enjoyed his work with them, still helping people in different ways. Roy had wonderful, supportive neighbors who he was very close to. The tremendous outpouring of love from friends, neighbors, clients, and the many people he helped shows how much Roy will be missed. https://gofund.me/8cb56a8d

I was saddened to learn of Roy´s passing. Many years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting and later working with Roy. Roy was a kind man who demonstrated empathy for individuals in need and provided evidence that recovery is possible. Those of us who had the good fortune to get to know Roy will always have a particular place in our hearts dedicated to Roy. We are grateful to his family, particularly his children, for sharing their father´s time with so many people in need. Roy will be deeply missed.

Roy is and was a very great man. I remember the first time I met Roy, and the last time we talked. I´m so proud of the steps he took to get himself back to where he needed to be in life.
Roy was always a joy to work with. I´ll always remember coming through the doors and Roy walking out of the office saying what do you think about the beach today Momma G, I always responded I´m game, so off we´d go to take the clients to the beach for the day, it was one of my joys spending beach days with the clients.
Roy you´ll always be in my heart RIP. I´ll miss you dearly.

I will forever remember Roy as one of the kindest and most generous people I have ever met. He sincerely loved helping people and could in seemingly every way under the sun. He was a sounding board and the "go-to-guy" for so many. He will be missed more than he could have imagined. Thank you for every single thing, Roy. Rest in peace.
