Reuben Otto Maas, 98, of La Grange, Texas, went to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 4, 2026.
Reuben was born on May 7, 1927, at home in Rutersville, Texas, to parents Otto and Clara (Beckendorf) Maas. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 71+ years, Mary (Schwegmann) Maas; father & mother-in-law, Diedrich & Mary (Rataj) Schwegmann and infant son Diedrich; brother, Delwin & wife, Eva Maas; sister, Irene Slaughter. Brother & sister-in-law, Allen & Barbra (Schwegmann) Mueller, Joanne (Baca) Mueller; sisters-in-law, Ruth Schwegmann, Kathy (Koepke) Schwegmann; grandson, Joel (Joey) Denby lll.
He is survived by his son Michael & Donna Maas, granddaughter Ginger & Harold Robinson; great grandson Matthew Brugger; great granddaughter, Miranda (Brugger) Wright & husband Keaton, great-great grandchildren Grace & Nolen Wright. Daughter Cheryl Maas. Brother-in-law David Schwegmann; sister-in-law Annie (Citzler) Mueller; numerous nieces, nephews, & many cousins.
Reuben was raised on a farm and attended Harms School near Rutersville, Texas. He was baptized at Freyburg Methodist Church. While working on the farm, Reuben also had a milk route in the La Grange area. He was a WW ll Air Force Veteran.
Reuben married Mary Schwegmann on December 16, 1947, at the Methodist Church in La Grange, Texas. He was employed by RC Cola which was in La Grange. He was also employed by the Texas Department of Transportation where he later retired with over 37 years of service. After retiring from TxDOT, he was employed by Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home then for Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home for several years.
Reuben Maas, Past Master Mason, was awarded the Golden Trowel from both (La Grange) LaFayette Lodge #34 in 1993 & Fayetteville Lodge #240 in 2020. Reuben receive a 65-Year Masonic Service Award which was presented by his home lodge, (La Grange) La Fayette Lodge #34. In addition, he is a member of the following lodge's; Fayetteville Lodge #240, (Brenham) Graham #20, Weimer Lodge #423, (Bastrop) Mina Lodge #1456, (Columbus) Caledonia #68, (Schulenburg) Lyons Masonic Lodge # 195. Brother Masons will serve as pallbearers.
Reuben was a member of Lone Star Chapter #6 R.A.M. York Rite 32°, Scottish Rite 33° KCCH, Ben Hur Shriner, for more than 55+ years. As well as The Order of the Eastern Star. Reuben was also a member of The American Legion Post #102 of La Grange, Texas.
He was leader at Rutersville 4-H club for many years, as well as the La Grange 4-H Horse Club. Reuben worked at the Fayette County Fair livestock gate for 25+ years.
A visitation will be held prior to the funeral service on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at New Life Methodist Church of La Grange from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow the church service at the Rutersville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: New Life Methodist Church in La Grange, Texas; St. Paul Lutheran Church Youth Ministry of Columbus, Texas; Shriners Children's Hospital; or a
charity of your choice.
