Ruby Stephenson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Crawford / Ray Funeral Home on Feb. 23, 2026.
Ruby Haskett Stephenson, 87 years old, entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 20, 2026. She finished her earthly race surrounded by her family.

Ruby was born to the late Joe F. and Margie Haskett on December 23, 1938, in Bayboro, North Carolina. Her twin sister and she were the first of five siblings. The family moved to Jackson County when she was young. She spent most of her school and teenage years in her community of Speedwell. The family migrated to Haywood County during her High School years, where she graduated from Waynesville Township High School.

Ruby is preceded in death by both parents, her twin sister, Opal Haskett Moore, her sister, Gladys Haskett Smith, and is survived by both her brothers, Joe F. Haskett Jr. and Jack Haskett. Ruby also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Ruby was a devoted and loving mother to Mark Stephenson (Ginger) and Matthew Stephenson (Ami). Her greatest pride and joy was being a Nana to her grandchildren, Megan (Tobie), Tyler (Leah), Brantley, Teague, and Chloe – and great-grandchildren, Bryce, Lucy, and her precious namesake, little Ruby. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue for generations.

Ruby was a woman of steadfast faith, and she trusted the Lord in every season. She lived her life anchored in Scripture and was known to be a fierce prayer warrior. She believed wholeheartedly in God's promises, and she now rests in the eternal joy prepared for her. As it is written, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." – 2 Timothy 4:7.

Ruby loved working puzzles, drinking coffee, eating ice cream, and most of all, cooking for her family. Her chocolate gravy and biscuits were a treasured tradition. She also enjoyed sitting on her porch during warm weather, faithfully keeping watch over the neighborhood – lovingly known as the "community watch". From that porch, she offered waves with big smiles, good conversation, quiet prayers, and a steady presence.

Ruby lived a simple, yet beautiful life – one that centered on faith and family. While her family grieves, they do so with hope, knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8).

A funeral service will be held at 2:00PM on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Reverend Joe F. Haskett Jr., Reverend Ray Haskett, and Reverend Matt Pruett will be officiating. Special music will be provided by Shawn Porter. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Crawford / Ray Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Ruby's memory to Pinnacle Church, 415 Fibreville Street, Canton, NC 28716, or to The Orchard Church, 205 W Brook Drive, Waynesville, NC 28786.
