Profile of Life

Ruby Jean Gentry Stokes was born on September 18, 1936 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Ruby was one of three children born to the late Edward Lee Gentry and the late Ella (Corsey) Gentry-Wooten. As a small child she and her family moved to Tucson, Arizona where she attended school and graduated in 1953. In September, Ruby met and later married a handsome military man named, George Stokes on August 6, 1955. Out of their union came Loretta Jean Black, William Franklin Depriest- Gentry and Beverly Ann Stokes.

Ruby enjoyed life by playing bingo, entertaining and doing art projects with her children. She also was a model and trend setter in her own right, but her main concern was being a good wife and mother. She liked hand quilting, baking and working in her garden during the summer seasons.

Ruby was the glue that held her family together. She was the go-to parent when things were more then we could bear. She had time for us and she always had time to lend an ear, no matter how unimportant things may have seemed. She always had words of encouragement and wisdom to boot.

Ruby was and always will be a jewel refined and polished with class, style and elegance. She was very private, never saying how she felt, but showed you in her own special way. Her embrace was like a hug from an angel here on earth.

Early on Wednesday morning, March 3, 2010 at the United Medical Center in Washington, D.C., our precious jewel, Ruby, transitioned from this earthly life to life eternal.

In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death, by her son, William Franklin (Depriest) Gentry, brother, Kenneth Wooten and aunt, Lillie May Curry.

Ruby leaves to cherish many loving memories, her husband of 54 years, George Stokes; daughters, Loretta Jean (Stokes) Black, Beverly A. Stokes-Law and Paula M. Surage; son-in-law, Alonzo Black Jr.; grandchildren, Akyva L. Ashton and husband, Cori Ashton, Tondaleya Shamley and husband, Lindell Shamley, Niesha D Stokes, Avyka Black and fiancé, Moe Peterson, Alonzo Black III, Devon Black and wife, Susan Black, Louisa V. Law-Popovic, Jayshree Surage, Vijay Surage and wife, Mila Surage; great grandchildren, Aja T. Ashton, Page T. Ashton, Aasiyah N. Foulks, Chase N. Peterson, Alonzo Black IV, Brittany, Tiamia, Takara, Shakeem, Shaquam, Alana, Jason, Alonzo Jr., Xavier, Ayannah, Travonne, Troy, Jasmyn M. Stokes, Amber L. Stokes, Trinitee L. Stokes, Malachi Dickerson-Law-Popovic and Jade M. Surage; brothers, Edward Lee Gentry, Jr. and wife, Lurliena and family, Ronald E. Wooten and Millicent Wooten; family members of whom Ruby's life, has touched during her journey here on earth, James and Kay Fedd and family, Sammie L. Singleton and family, Rosa Gibson and family, Dorothy Solomon and family, Robert and Yvonne Singleton and family, Jessie Harris and family, Marjorie Ross and family, Pastor Larry and First Lady, Althea Chavers and family; Ruby will also be missed by her very closest friend, Mrs. Rachael Naynrez, a childhood friend, Mrs. Freida Farrell, Beverly Farrell and family, Jacqui Farrell and family, Diane Warren and family, Deborah Carrington and family and Castello Bently and family and a host of other relatives and friends.

Her Viewing and Home Going Celebration will be held on Monday, March 22, 2010 in the Chapel of THORNTON Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road (State Route #227, Pomonkey) Indian Head, Maryland 20640 from 11am until time of Service, 12 noon. Interment, 2 pm at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, Maryland.
