Russell Clukey Obituary

Published by Legacy from Aug. 4 to Aug. 6, 2025.
SIDNEY - Russell Thomas Clukey, 79, passed away unexpectedly on July 29, 2025. He was born in Dexter, Maine, on January 17, 1946, the son of Raymond and Florence (Frautten) Clukey.
Russell was a devoted husband, father, educator, coach, and friend. He married the love of his life, Bonita "Bonnie" Clukey, and together they raised their two children, building a life filled with love, laughter, and deep-rooted values.
A natural athlete, Russell's passion for sports remained with him throughout his life. He excelled in golf, baseball, softball, hockey, basketball, and even played hockey and softball well into his 60s. He was immensely proud to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at both Dexter High School and the University of Maine in Presque Isle-testaments to his talent, dedication, and love of the game.
Russell had a lifelong love of animals, especially his beloved dogs. Known for his sharp wit, clever banter, and boundless sense of humor, he was a true jokester who brought joy and laughter wherever he went. His friendships were strong and deeply meaningful, especially among his close-knit circle of "the guys," with whom he shared many lighthearted exchanges.
He found great purpose in coaching and mentoring young people. As a lifelong educator, Russell taught and guided students throughout Maine, and later in Texas and Florida, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives. His passion for teaching extended beyond the classroom- he was a mentor, a motivator, and a steady presence in the lives of those he coached and taught.
After retiring, Russell returned to his beloved home state of Maine, where he enjoyed the peace and beauty of familiar surroundings with family and friends.
He is predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Florence Clukey (Frautten), and his sister Joan Clukey and her husband Doug Clukey. Russell is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; his son Dennis Clukey; daughter Catherine Powers and her husband John Powers; his grandchild Blake Clukey; sister Carmy Nelson and husband Roger; and brother Robert "Bobby" Clukey and wife Tammy; extended family, many former students and athletes, and a wide circle of friends who will deeply miss his humor, wisdom, and kindness.
A celebration of Russell's life will be held on August 9, 1:30-4:30pm at the Summit Room located at Thomas College in Waterville. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to a local animal shelter or educational fund of your choice.
