John Russell Frank, known affectionately as Rusty, died peacefully on December 8th, 2023. Born on July 4, 1940, in Davao, Philippines, he moved to the United States in 1941 and grew up in
Atlanta, Georgia, on North Decatur Rd. He was the son of the late Samuel Boone Frank and Frances Russell Frank. He is preceded in death by his son, John Russell Frank, Jr., and brother, Samuel Frank, Jr. He is survived by his brother, Patrick Frank. Rusty's life was a testament to his passion for nature, love for life's simple joys, and unwavering commitment to family.
A proud graduate of Sewanee University, Rusty often shared stories of his days on the mountain. Furthering his academic journey, he obtained a master's degree from Furman University and a Ph.D. from Georgia State University. Rusty's professional path led him to serve as the Head of School at Holy Innocence Episcopal School in
Atlanta, Georgia, and later at Sea Pines Academy on
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He then transitioned into educational consulting for the Mid-South Association of Independent Schools.
Rusty's commitment to service began in his youth as an Eagle Scout. In his retirement, he generously volunteered for the Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry, maintained trails in Montreat, and actively participated on environmental preservation committees. He helped maintain the Memorial Garden in Montreat and served as an elder in the Montreat Presbyterian Church. Gardening, hiking, reading, writing, and playing the trombone were Rusty's passions. For fifteen years, he lent his musical talents to The Tarnished Brass, a group of retired musicians who brought joy to local events and were a beloved feature of the Montreat 4th of July parade. During summers, Sally Jones Pottery provided a haven for his creative pursuits. Among the cherished memories of Rusty, those of him smiling and exploring the creek in Montreat with his grandchildren stand out. His ability to find joy in simple moments was infectious, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who shared those precious times.
Rusty's love for family extended beyond the present, as he authored a book detailing his family's experiences in the Philippines during World War II, preserving their history for generations to come.
To his children and grandchildren, "Pop" was a beacon of kindness and gentleness. He imparted invaluable lessons, teaching them to embrace nature, explore the outdoors, prioritize family, and practice kindness. The principles he held dear continue to thrive in the hearts of his wife of fifty-eight years, Peggy Ann McKeand Frank, his three daughters and sons-in-law, Cheairs and Dave Graves, Susan and Eric Lowe, Margaret and Darin Mortimer, and his six grandchildren, Dawson Graves, Margaret-Ann Graves, Anna Lowe, William Lowe, Brady Mortimer, and Quentin Mortimer. Rusty's legacy lives on, carried forward by the love, laughter, and values he shared with those fortunate enough to know him. His remarkable ability to listen and engage in wonderful conversations endeared him to all who crossed his path. Rusty's warm presence made him a friend to everyone he met, leaving a lasting impact on the lives he touched.
