Ruth Kinney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Smith-Gallo Funeral Home - Guthrie on Dec. 22, 2025.
Ruth Elaine Kinney, age 98, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025. She was born on March 29, 1927, to Grover and Stella Martin in Coyle, Oklahoma.

Ruth grew up moving from farm to farm as her father worked as a tenant farmer. Over the years, the family lived in Coyle, Lakeview, Harmony, and finally Seward. She was the eleventh of fourteen children in the Martin family and learned early the values of hard work, resilience, and family. Ruth graduated from Guthrie High School.

In 1946, she married Bill Kinney, and together they began farming in southwest Logan County, where Ruth would live for the remainder of her life. Although she always listed her occupation as "homemaker," she was, in truth, a farmer's wife in every sense-working tirelessly, supporting her family, and taking great pride in farm life.

Ruth was active in the Seward Church and Harmony Church and participated in several community organizations, including Home Demonstration Clubs, Farm Wives, Farm Bureau, the Oklahoma Airstream Club, and Camp Joy. She was also active in the Edmond Senior Center for the past 10 years. Her life reflected a deep commitment to faith, family, and community.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 68 years, Bill Kinney; her parents, Grover and Stella Martin; and her thirteen brothers and sisters.

Ruth is survived by her sons, Karl Kinney and his wife, Lesli of Edmond, Oklahoma, their son, Michael, and Karl's daughter, Keisha Simoneaux of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Keith Kinney and his wife, Pam, Keith's son, James and wife, Toni of San Antonio, Texas and Pam's kids, Devin and Alexis, and 5 grandchildren.

A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 27, 2025 at the First United Methodist Church located at 224 East Noble Avenue in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, 220 North 1st Street, Guthrie, Oklahoma 73044.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harmony Community Church building fund, P.O. Box 1393, Guthrie, Oklahoma 73044.

There will not be any visitation.

Sherri & I came to know Ruth through the Edmond Senior Center.
Since we were both raised in rural Osage Co. OK., we connected with Ruth with regard to farming and ranching as a part of our backgrounds too.

Ruth was considerate and kind and alway quick with a wave and a hello. We had the joy of speaking with her at length during the last Christmas lunch at the senior center. Her wonderful demenour was enhanced by her always looking sharp in how she looked and what she wore.
But most of all, she possessed that quality that seems so rare anymore...she carried herself with Class!

Thank you Ruth for being a part of our lives and making our days a little brighter.

I met Ruth 10 years ago in the Early Risers Exercise Class at the Edmond Senior Center. She was a very active participant. Afterwards, we would play cards. Ruth was very nice and I was glad to call her my friend. She will be missed.
