Ruth T. "Auntie Ruthie" Stewart, has passed away at the golden age of 104, but the legacy she leaves behind is virtually unrivaled.
Born in a house in downtown Chicago when the streets were dirt and traveled upon by horse and buggy, she was seemingly an average child. Throughout her life she proved she was anything but average. In her younger days, she was an avid skier and cyclist and spent a lot of time in Momence, Il. She enjoyed painting as she was very talented artist. She also was involved in running a summer camp with one of her best friends, Dorothy. After completing high school she went on to earn a Bachelor degree, a Masters degree and PhD.
This was just the beginning. She taught physical education at the high school level and went on to become a high school principal. Along the way she won several awards for her exemplary contributions to the teaching profession. She became very involved in the fight for civil/women's rights in the realm of principals and assistant principals. She, and others, sued the City of Chicago for alleged discriminatory practice. The suit dragged on in the court system for several years and ultimately rendered a positive decision for Auntie Ruthie. She achieved a pay scale that was equal without bias as to gender or race.
In addition to her many accolades awarded her for her teaching and leadership in the academic community, she has a number of inventions and patents to her credit. Including, the Catholic Rosary ring, the magnetic travel checker board and a special toilet design to name a few.
After her retirement from teaching she spent her winters in Florida swimming 2 miles every day. She also took on a hobby of day trading in the stock market every weekday. She was a well-spring of knowledge in the area of investing. When asked her secret for longevity and mental astuteness, her response was very simple "keep moving"
Your family will miss you and there will be a large void in the world without her.
Funeral Mass, Monday, November 17, 10:00 am at Saint Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, 320 S Washington Street, (across the street from the Ryan-Parke funeral home), Park Ridge, IL. Interment, Oakridge Cemetery, Hillside, IL.
