Ruth Strickland attended Hume-Fogg High School in Nashville, Tennessee, graduating in 1955. From a young age, she was recognized for her ability to motivate, inspire, and lead by example. In high school, she received two superlatives, "Best All Around" and "Most Likely to Succeed," personal examples of her leadership. Those qualities continued to hold true throughout her life.
Ruth's career began when she was employed by National Life Insurance Company in 1955. She later met and married the love of her life, Herbert Strickland, of Atlanta in 1961. She then started a new chapter in her career path as assistant to Paul Duke for 20 years who was the founder in 1968 and visionary for Peachtree Corners, Inc. Ruth later become President and CEO of Peachtree Corners, Inc. in 1987, and President of Peachtree Corners, Inc., the parent company in 1990. The company brought about a community that continues to grow and prosper today. She later owned two business centers where she remained until her retirement in 2013. Ruth served on several boards which included the Peachtree Corners Downtown Development Authority, Bank of Horizon, and the Gwinnett Foundation.
In addition to her professional career, Ruth taught Sunday School at Peachtree Corners Baptist Church for many years, sang in the choir, volunteered with the youth program every Wednesday night followed by helping with English as a Second Language classes. She also volunteered at Relay for Life for many years. Ruth and Herb adopted Jay Bird Alley Road where they spent much of their time cleaning the street near their community to keep it looking beautiful. She volunteered at Northside Gwinnett every Wednesday in which she enjoyed visiting the patients' rooms and praying with them. Ruth and Herb had an open-door policy at their home for all missionaries that needed a place to stay. Ruth received the City of Peachtree Corners Community Service Award in Gwinnett.
Although Ruth loved giving back to her community and had a passion for business, it was her family that brought her the most joy in life. She loved spending quality time with her only child, Terri, and her husband, Todd, and their family. Ruth never missed an activity in their lives. They were always her priority as well as her church.
Ruth is survived by her beloved daughter, Terri (Todd) Tipton; cherished granddaughters, Maggie Elizabeth (Jeremy) Booth, Mary Grace (John) Addington; beloved great- grandson, James Walker Booth; sister, Mary (Bob) Clement; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Carson and Evelyn Dale Carson; as well as a host of extended family and close friends.
