Rychon "Rock" "Rocky" Davel Garrett, a New Orleans native, entered eternal rest on Saturday, June 21, 2025. Rychon D. Garrett received an unexpected call, and he accepted the call from the Lord at the age of 51. Although his family did not know this call was occurring, he accepted it.
Rychon was born on August 19, 1973, to the late Alice J. Garrett and Robert Garrett. Rychon was the second son born to Alice and Robert Garrett, out of three sons. Rychon loved the Lord, his family, his brothers, and having the ability to travel.
Rychon attended school in the New Orleans Parish School System and participated in the Boy Scouts. He attended Hartzell Methodist Center, Thomas Edison, George Washington Elementary, Mary D. Coghill Elementary, Andrew J. Bell Junior High School, F.W. Gregory Junior High School, Pierre Capdau Junior High School, and John F. Kennedy (JFK) High School (Class of 1991). Rychon loved music, and in his free time, he found joy playing the snare drum, where he excelled by attending several Junior High Schools to study under diverse band directors before attending JFK. Although he was a band head, he excelled in science, technology, and math, which led him to attend Xavier University of Louisiana to major in Chemistry. Although he was a Xavier student, he frequently visited Dillard University, where he met a multitude of people who became lifelong friends. During his summers in high school, Rychon was introduced to motorcoach buses, where he learned how to drive and care for them. He would work on the weekends while attending high school and college to earn money. In addition, Rychon joined Prince Hall Vera Cruz Lodge #24, where he studied to become a Mason, advancing to the 33rd Degree. He was also a member of the Shrine in Karum #48 Lodge in Gulfport, Mississippi. Rychon was also an active member of the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club. Rychon was the heart and soul of the family. He enjoyed family gatherings and reunions, cooking, and conversing with the elders to learn about his family history.
Rychon is survived by his wonderful wife of 18 years, La'Charlotte' C. Garrett, his children: Ryla D. Garrett, Rychon D. Garrett, Jr. and Ry'Ann D. Garrett; his father: Robert Garrett; his in-laws: Gerald and La'Jean Green; his brother, Michael C. Garrett (Anjanlyn); his sister-in- law's: Gwendell Garrett and Ashanti Green; his brother-in-law: Gerald Green, Jr.; his god-daughter and niece: Micha Garrett; his nephews: Michael Garrett II, Matthew Garrett, Dave Peterson, David Green, and Sterling Garrett; and his nieces: Shiyanne Green, Gabrianna Green, Giovanna Green, Gianna Garrett and Ophelia Green; his Aunt's: Dr. Wanda G. Griggs (Robert); Gail Garrett, Jonell Scurlock (Gerald), Rosetta Jackson, and God-son Hyram Hurd. Also, survived by a host of Godchildren, Cousins, and close friends.
Rychon is preceded in death by his mother: Alice J. Garrett; his younger brother: Omar L. Garrett; his grandparents: William and Correen Jackson; Aunts: Rosie Jackson Johnson, Mary Jackson Lynum, Lilly Jackson Green, LuBertha Jackson, and Murriel Jackson Barber; Uncles: William McKinley Jr.; Thomas Jackson; and Cleo Jackson.
