Sallie Salter Robeson Ormsby, 89, of Wilmington, NC passed away on March 23, 2026. Sallie was born on August 17 , 1936 in
Tar Heel, NC to the late Salter and "Charlie" Robeson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale "Max" Ormsby and daughters, Kathryn Love Ormsby and Donna Marie Nibbe along with her brothers, Jeff Robeson, Jimmy Robeson and her sister Eliza Webb. She is survived by her sister, Emily Love Hubbard of Greenville, SC, sons, John Ormsby of
Rockingham, NC and Dale Ormsby (Robin) of Wilmington, NC and her grandchildren, Shannon Hufham (Mike), Faye Fay (Chris), Ross Freshwater (Amberlee), Lula Ormsby, Mary Hermeling (Drew) and Mary Carolyn Nibbe. Sallie is also survived by 12 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. She was also the beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.
Sallie grew up in Tar Heel and
Laurinburg, NC spending a lot of time with her beloved "Aunt Bobbie". She followed her sister to UNC-Chapel Hill where she earned a B.S. degree in Nursing. Sallie loved nursing and was such a kind and compassionate nurse. She also loved the Lord and was involved in mission work, traveling to various places to serve before she met her husband.
She met her husband, Max Ormsby, in Laurinburg on a blind double date with Max and her future brother-in-law and sister-in-law. They married in 1962 and raised their family in
Raeford, NC and
Rockingham, NC where Salle worked at Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham as well as Moore County Hospital in Pinehurst. The Ormsby family was involved at First Baptist Church where Sallie continued to serve the Lord. She taught a ladies Sunday School class, and was an R.A. leader where she taught young boys about missions. She was also very involved in the prison ministry for a long time investing in the lives of the incarcerated and sharing Jesus with them. Sallie served in many other capacities in the life of the church, even making two mission trips to Ukraine where she and "Max" served the people there. They even brought a young Ukrainian boy to live in their home and attend high school in Rockingham for a year.
Sallie was always active in the community serving as a Cub Scout den mother and involved in civic organizations. She also adored her grandchildren and loved spending time with them. Sallie enjoyed so many family reunion beach trips every summer. Her life was about service to her family and to others. That was what made her happy.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at First Baptist Church of
Rockingham, NC at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to First Baptist Church of Rockingham.
