Sam Law

Sam Law went to heaven on August 30, 2025. Sam was born on April 11, 1947 in Cameron, Texas. He had a gift in ministering to – and serving – others. As a gifted physician, a proud grandfather, a father, and a husband, he had a true servant's heart.

Sam graduated from Bellaire High School in 1965 and from Rice University in 1970. He then served two years in the Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he met the love of his life, Lydia Hall Law. Sam and Lydia were married on March 18, 1973 in Raleigh, North Carolina, and moved to Houston – where Sam attended Baylor College of Medicine. After completing his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Law joined a thriving medical practice in the Medical Center working out of Scurlock Tower and Methodist Hospital. Sam began to profoundly impact thousands of lives through his determination to provide the best care for his patients. It was his honor and privilege to serve so many patients, and he truly enjoyed being a part of the birth of many of their children. Sam cherished the relationships that he built with the other doctors, the nurses, and all of the wonderful people at Methodist and later, Texas Children's. He served as Chief of the Medical Staff at Methodist in the early 2000s, and he worked tirelessly to promote and serve both Methodist and Baylor College of Medicine.

After moving back to Houston in 1973, Sam and Lydia joined South Main Baptist Church – where he was a member for 52 years, serving in many leadership roles primarily in the areas of missions and ministries. Sam served as a nursery volunteer, a youth Sunday School teacher, and an adult Sunday School teacher. He served as Chairman of the Deacons and spent a great deal of time on numerous committees at South Main. His servant mindset and a calling from the Lord, led him to travel on many medical mission trips in his life. In 1985, he went on his first of many trips to India – where he served the great people of Bangalore Baptist Hospital for many years. He remained involved with them throughout the rest of his life. After Sam took his last mission trip to Bangalore, he turned his attention to Peru where he joined up with the amazing people of OSA to serve those in need in Peru. He attended more than 20 medical trips to Peru.

Sam was predeceased by his mother, Julia Verne Maxwell, his father, Samuel William Law, and his wife, Lydia Hall Law. He is survived by his son, Samuel Todd Law, and his wife Charla Smith Law, and their sons Luke Samuel Law and Lane Charles Law, all of whom reside in College Station, Texas; as well as Sam's brother, Richard Law, and sister-in law Sherry Law (of Houston); as well as niece Alison Law and nephew Adam Law, and his wife Kelly Law (all of Houston). Additional survivors include step-brother Sherman Law, step-sister Roxanne Ferguson, sister-in-law Graeme Law, sister-in-law Alma Jo Langston of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Alma Jo's daughter, Aimee Langston Sanders and son, Brice Langston, as well as many cousins, great nieces, and great nephews.

Sam's family wishes to thank the health care professionals at Methodist and Texas Children's who worked with – and cared for – him for all these many years. He adored the relationships that he made with you. Lastly, Sam's family expresses our sincerest gratitude for the wonderful members and staff at South Main Baptist Church who have cared for Sam (and Lydia & Todd) for more than 50 years. Thank you for showing the love of Christ over and over again.

A memorial service to celebrate Sam's life will be held in the South Main Baptist Church sanctuary on Friday, September 12 at 11:00 a.m. Instead of floral tributes, Sam's family suggests donations to South Main Baptist Church Foundation, 4100 Main St, Houston, Texas 77002, financialoffice@smbc.org.
