Sammie Joyce (Sis) Lahodny was born on February 22, 1943, near Munden, Kansas, to George E. and Frances (Sramek) Sis. She passed away on October 8, 2025, at the age of 82. She was baptized into the Catholic Church and was a lifelong member of St. Edward Catholic Church in Belleville, Kansas. She attended school in Belleville, graduating from Belleville High in 1960. She then worked at Food Mart and the Belleville Telescope before marrying Roger D. Lahodny on Monday, April 22, 1963, in Belleville. To this union two children were born, Jeffrey Dean and Leah Denise.
Sammie belonged to the VFW Auxiliary and the Belleville Victory HDU. She was a charter member of the Touchstone Junior Club, a board member of the Kansas Junior Miss Pageant, and a member of the St. Edward Altar Society. She also worked at Krob Studio, MC Industries, and Scott Specialties where she retired from as a Supervisor. She returned to work part time at Scott Specialties, and she was a chapel sitter at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home for a number of years. Sammie was also a regular blood donor to the American Red Cross, donating more than 15 gallons of blood in her lifetime.
Sammie was a devoted wife, mother and friend to many. Her favorite thing to do was spending time with her family, her kids and grandkids were the highlight of her life. Sammie had a special way of welcoming everyone into her heart and home. If she knew you - you were family. A favorite activity was camping. She enjoyed sitting around the campfire and counting airplanes in the sky, always trying to get more than Roger. Fair week was also a special annual event that included family and friends gathering in the driveway, with many others stopping by to say hi or waving as they drove by.
Sammie was an avid seamstress, sewing items for many people over the years, there wasn’t anything she couldn’t make or repair. She used her creative skills to bake and decorate cakes, winning several purple ribbons at the fair. She also enjoyed using her computer to make personalized cards for special occasions. She and Roger traveled across the country on their Kawasaki touring motorcycle pulling a quick camp trailer. They visited several states and Canada, camping along the way. After their cycling days were over, they purchased a camper and enjoyed many camping trips together, even if it was just out to Rocky Pond. They shared this tradition with their kids and grandkids who have continued to carry it on.
She is preceded in death by her parents George and Frances Sis, sister Ilene Mae Reed Milner and her husband Jack, and sister in law Nancy Sis. She is survived by her husband Roger, son Jeffrey of Lindsborg, daughter Leah Moser and her husband Seth of Stilwell, Kansas; grandchildren, Ben Sanders, Blake Sanders and his wife Aubrey, Will Sanders and his wife Madison, Bailey Roberts, James Moser, and Josh Owen; brothers Robert Sis of Gretna, Nebraska, and Frankie Sis and his wife Linda of Belleville, sister Becky Leon and her husband Kelly of Concordia, Kansas, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Sammie loved the color purple and bright colorful clothing. In her memory the family welcomes you to wear purple or bright colors to her services. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, October 14th, at 10:30 am, at St. Edward Catholic Church in Belleville. Burial will follow at the Belleville City Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, October 13th, from 1:00 pm - 8:00 pm, at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home. Rosary/Vigil Services will be held at 6:00 pm Monday at the funeral home, and the family will greet friends following the Rosary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Republic County Hospital or the Tammy Walker Cancer Center, and may be mailed to Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, PO Box 566, Belleville, Kansas, 66935. Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home is assisting the Lahodny family with arrangements.
