Sammy Drew O'Bier

Sammy Drew O'Bier, 86, of Beaumont, TX, died Thursday, February 5, 2026. He was born at home September 29, 1939 in Springhill, Louisiana to Fred Warren O'Bier and Sylvia Sandlin O'Bier Burnett.

Sammy grew up in Springhill and was active in his community which he held dear. He participated in boy scouts, church camps, the high school band and football team, and made many friends. Springhill is also the place where Sam met young Wilma Joye Dumas, who he would eventually marry. They always returned for each of their class reunions.

Sammy was born into a family which he described as "God fearing, church going, and family oriented." They attended church together every Sunday and all meals were "family meals." As a pre-teen, Sam was "saved by Jesus." In his final days, Sam noted that he counted these as blessings and also noted, "I married a wonderful woman who has given me three wonderful children."

Sam and Joye were married in June of 1962. Shortly after, he joined the Army Reserves and earned first place in the rifle competition in his basic training company for hitting 118 of 120 targets. Sammy was a devoted husband through 62 years of marriage and beyond. He was a family man, always providing, always protecting, and quietly leading by example. He was very dependable and capable of making quick decisions then taking action. He didn't always say it aloud, but he had subtle ways of letting his loved ones know that he cared for them dearly.

Sam was a hard worker and succeeded in a variety of fields including livestock farming, management, sales, building and construction, and more. His favorite seemed to be his career as an Insurance Sales Agent and Regional Director at Aflac in which he worked alongside Joye for over a decade. During these years they both excelled in sales, received many awards, and traveled to countless destinations together.

Sam was a member of many organizations. He was active in the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity as he pursued and completed his degree in Business Administration at Louisiana Tech and was also an active alumnus. He was a member of Shriners International, the Masons, the Lions Club, and the Safari Club International. As a long time, member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Sam founded the Beaumont chapter after moving to Texas.

Sammy had a passion for the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, river rafting, boating, canoeing, and horseback riding. He took yearly trips with his brothers, son, and friends to take many species of game and fish. In 1988, Sam was recognized for shooting the largest recorded elk in the U.S that year. Sam had a love for animals, and it seemed they were naturally drawn to him as well. He always had one or more of his dogs trailing behind him as he walked around the house and yard. He also enjoyed watching movies and sports, cooking for family, and listening to music. His life was full and rewarding by his own admission.

Sammy Drew O'Bier was a strong, patient, and resilient man. He was loved by his many family and friends and will continue to be loved and remembered for many years to come.

Survivors include his children, Kim O'Bier Williams, Kelli Paige O'Bier Rawls, and Jason Klay O'Bier, grandchildren, Randi Elizabeth Rawls and Reef Drew O'Bier, siblings, Betty Sue O'Bier Robinson and husband, Mack, Fred Warner O'Bier, Jr., Michael Wayne O'Bier and wife Sandy, and Paula Jane House, sister-in laws, Jacquita O'Bier and Pat Dumas upa, nephews, Rusty Robinson, Timothy House, and Michael Paul O'Bier, nieces, Rhonda Roberts, Connie Angerstein, Stacy Perkins, and Autumn Cribb.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, aunt and uncle Hope and Del Mar Tyler, brother-in-law's, Jimmy House and Joseph Tupa, and niece, Teena Davis Gray.

A gathering of Mr. O'Bier's family and friends will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Broussard's 505 North 12th street, Nederland.

Another gathering of Mr. O'Bier's family and friends will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Monday, February 16, 2025, at Bailey Funeral Home, 304 1st Street NW, Springhill, Louisiana. His graveside service will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at Springhill Cemetery, 506 Cemetery Road, Springhill, Louisiana.
