Samuel E. (Buddy) Alter, 56, of S. Chesterfield, Va., passed on Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his wife and family. He was married to the love of his life, Dale Wolfrey Alter, for 36 years. He graduated from Colonial Heights High School, Class of 1979. His greatest accomplishment in life was being a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved going to OBX with his family, go-kart racing, Christmas in Gloucester, mud-bogging and country shopping with his wife. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and he loved "The Grinch." Buddy's passion in life was wastewater. He was the plant manager of Parham Landing wastewater plant in New Kent County. He loved his job so much and all his employees from the bottom of his heart. He loved teaching them and respected each and every one of them. When he became sick, it was his goal to get better to return to work, but God had other plans. He was previously employed at Henrico County Public Utilities, Wastewater department, ERM of Richmond as a wastewater operator of different locations, but mainly Front Royal, VA, Phillip Morris (Altria), Bells Road and Phillip Morris Park 500. He leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Dale Wolfrey Alter of S. Chesterfield; father, James R. Alter of Macclesfield, N.C.; two sons, Travis Wolfrey and wife Miranda of Prince George, Va., Lynwood Collier and wife Bridget of Gloucester, Va.; daughter, Tonya Dale Alter of S. Chesterfield; brother, James (Jimmy) Alter and wife Kathy of Henrico, Va.; sisters, Sissy Alter of Henrico, Va., and Krissy Alter Franchok and husband Paul of Prince George, Va.; grandchildren, Bethany, Chastin, Zach, Ryan, Hunter, Braden, Emily, Tanner (Woo-Woo), Shayna and Colton (Biggie); great-grandchildren, Emerson, Dalton, Delaney and Weston; brothers-in-law, Raymond Wolfrey and wife Debbie of Dinwiddie, Va., Wayne Wolfrey of Sussex, Va., and Eric Wolfrey and wife Lois of Dinwiddie, Va.; sister-in-law, Dianne Wolfrey Lewis and husband John L. of Church Road, Va.; many nieces and nephews; his three closest friends that he loved dearly, William Britton, Rick Callis and Harold Jones; and his precious fur baby, Shiloh. He was preceded in death by his mother, Anneliese Smidberger Alter; sister, Lolly Alter Gillmore and husband Mike; brother, Alan Alter; mother-in-law, Frances Wolfrey; father in-law, Wilton B. Wolfrey; and sister in-law, Cindy Frazier. What to say, What to do? I don't Know! I have never felt like this. Words are not enough, I thought I was prepared but I was wrong. So much I want to say to you, so much left to do. I would trade 10 years of my life for one more minute to make sure you knew I loved you and what I thought of you. I lost my Dad of 36 years yesterday. The things you showed me, the lessons I learned. If I end up a third the man you are I will be a hell of a man. I love you Buddy. - Son, Lynwood. I hope you know how much I love you. I am the husband, father and man that I am today because of you. You taught me by example, and I thank you for it. - Son, Travis We welcome you to come celebrate Buddy's life with us at E.
