Samuel Florez Montanez

Samuel "Sammy" Montanez, 80, of Davis St., passed away on January 14, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. As per his wishes, a cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at West Funeral Home Chapel.
Samuel "Sammy" Montanez was born to Pedro F. and Guadalupe (Florez) Montanez on November 27, 1944, in Carlsbad. He was raised in Carlsbad and graduated from CHS in 1964. He played for the Cavemen as running back and set many high school rushing records. He played with the Caveman football team when they won the championship in 1961 and 1962. Sammy and Erminia "Minnie" (Lucero) Montanez were married on July 22, 1967, in Loving, NM. He received an Honorable Discharge from the New Mexico National Guard in 1971 after serving for 6 years. He enjoyed doing yard work, had a love for mechanic work building and rebuilding engines. Back in the day he was the team mechanic for a drag race team who involved friends and family. He enjoyed spending time and spoiling his grandkids, always giving them sweets before meals. He retired from IMCC Potash Mines in 1998 where he was employed as an operator.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Stephanie, and brothers Mike Montanez and Jerry Montanez.
He is survived by his wife, his son Sam Montanez of Carlsbad, NM; daughters, Selma Montanez of Denver, CO, and Susie Canava and husband Tino Canava of Denver, CO, brother Ismael "Smiley" Montanez of Albuquerque, NM, sister Minnie Hensley of Carlsbad, NM and 7 grandchildren, Dennis, Mikaela, Zackary, Jacob, Kaleb, Isiah, and Isaac. Also 3 Great Grandchildren Abel, Mila & Barrett.
