Samuel Simmons

Elder Samuel Simmons, affectionately known as "Sammy" departed this life on Wednesday, February, 22, 2023 at his home in Dover, Delaware. Sammy was born September 17, 1936, to the late Pauline Summers in Hartly, Delaware. He was later adopted as an infant and raised by the late John and Grace Simmons of Clayton, Delaware.
Sammy received his early education in the Clayton and Smyrna School Districts and graduated from William Henry Comprehensive High School in 1954. He went on to attend Delaware State College now Delaware State University Dover, Delaware.
Sammy joined and served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged after three years of service. He was employed at St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Delaware for over 20 years retiring as chief custodian. He then became employed as a custodian at Mamie A. Warren Senior Center Smyrna, Delaware.
Elder Samuel Simmons was the founder and Pastor of Holy Spirit Mission Church Hartly, Delaware for many years. He loved the Lord and his church families. He continued serving the Lord conducting Bible Study classes at varies times and worshipping at The Pentecostals of Dover, Delaware under Pastor Anthony Trout. God also led him to return to and frequently worship at the sanctuary where he began his Christian journey, Byrd's African Methodist Episcopal Church under Pastor John Jordan. In his spare time, you could always find him reading and studying his Bible. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends as well as talking on the phone.
Sammy was preceded in death by his beloved son Timothy S. Simmons, 2-brothers: Lamont Simmons and Leon Summers; 4- sisters: Virginia Brown, Yvonne Thompson, Sally Brown and Pauline Wisher and a grandson Sheldon Tate.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife: Doris Marie Simmons, daughter: Debo­rah Scott (James) Blended family, daughters: Cheryl Dean and Margaret Brown (Rob­ert), Granddaughter: Dorian Dean, Grandson: Robert Snelling, 2 great granddaughters: Londyn Tate and Alivia Tate. A brother: Ivan Jackson (Geraldine), 2 sisters: Cynthia Irby (Earl), and Sylvia Hawkins (Gabriel). Sisters-in-law: Gladys Wilson (Charles), Irene Garvin, and Jean Miller and a host of nieces, nephews cousins and friends. Special Bible Study friends: Evangelist Louise and William Raisin, cousin Estella Reed. Special Buddies Robert Lindsey, Bernard Williams Sr, and Warner Henry.
