Sandy Hurst Obituary
Sandy Edenfield Hurst, 86, formerly of Lowell, Ind., passed away peacefully the morning of December 21, 2025, in Medina, Ohio.
Born November 16, 1939, in Memphis, Tenn., Sandy had a lifelong love of music and taught elementary music education for the Tri-Creek School Corporation in Lowell for 32 years, where she was honored to be named Teacher of the Year before her retirement in 1995. Though petite in stature, she was able to command rooms of children and pass her love of music onwards. Throughout her thirty years of retirement, she continued to share her musical talents by performing with the High-Country String Band, playing the hammer dulcimer at weekly jam sessions during her winters in South Texas, and participating every summer in the Epworth Forest Choir School.
Sandy graduated from Central High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1957 before going on to major in music at Tennessee Wesleyan University, where she graduated in 1961. She then earned a Master's degree in music education in 1963 from the University of Kentucky, before moving to Lowell to begin her teaching career. It was there that she met her future husband, Stan, a fellow teacher who had also moved to Lowell to start his teaching career. They married in 1965 and started a family.
She was a longtime, faithful member of Lowell First United Methodist Church, where she served in many capacities, such as the chancel choir, the handbell choir, and the Susanna Wesley Circle, as well as numerous committees over the years. The church recognized her contributions by naming her Woman of the Year in 1983.
Sandy will be remembered for her sweet spirit, her radiant smile, and her signature love of the color red. Beyond sharing her gift of music, she was a prolific knitter who donated hundreds of handmade slippers to those in need. A gentle grandmother who never missed a chance to express her affection, she remained a devoted wife, deeply in love well into her golden years.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Stan; her sons Doug (Jill) Hurst and Dan Hurst (Bryan Watson), along with grandsons Jeff and Eric Hurst. Also surviving are her sister Judy Hodge and nephews Mike Hodge, Steve Hodge, and Charlie Herbst, along with extended family and many dear friends in Lowell and South Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lovett Henry Edenfield and Elizabeth Allison Edenfield, and her brother-in-law Tommy Hodge and sister-in-law Joan Herbst.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Lowell First United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., with lunch to follow. The family invites attendees to wear something red in honor of Sandy. Memorial contributions may be made to Lowell First United Methodist Church, 520 E Commercial Ave, Lowell, IN 46356.
