Obituary published on Legacy.com by St. John's Family Funeral Home & Crematory on Nov. 15, 2025.
Sandy K Lewis, 62, of St. Augustine Beach, Florida, departed this life November 10, 2025, peacefully at her home after a battle with cancer.
Born in 1963, in Norfolk, Virginia and raised in Virginia Beach, Sandy was a graduate of William and Mary and what was then known as the George Mason School of Law.
After a short career practicing law, Sandy returned to her true passion of working in the restaurant industry. A gourmet chef in her own right, over the course of her professional life Sandy became recognized as a go-to professional for all aspects of the industry in the Washington DC area. Her contributions included creating dining concepts, designing and building out venues, opening and managing eating establishments, and co-owning some of DCs most well-regarded restaurants.
Her professional endeavors included concept development and consulting for noted fine dining establishments including Jaleo, Zaytinia, Hank's Oyster Bar, Commonwealth, Supra, and many others. Over the years more than 25 dining establishments benefited from Sandy's creativity and expertise.
Sandy touched the lives of all who met her. Wherever Sandy went, she would create a community with her infectious good humor, positive energy and her generosity of spirit. You could only be a stranger to Sandy for a few minutes before finding out that you would become another of her treasured and appreciated friends. Sandy gleaned this trait from her beloved mother, 'Kit', with whom Sandy shared many escapades over the years. Kit, like Sandy, was always prepared to provide a welcoming meal to any size group, was always there to ease transitions between homes, and always ready to embark on a new adventure on a moment's notice.
Sandy was preceded in death by her mother, Doris 'Kit' Lesner Lewis (AKA Mother Woman); her brother Steve Lewis; her brother Brett Lewis; and her beloved Lab mix Scout. Sandy is survived by brothers Hank Lewis and David Lewis, and niece Sarafina Lewis and nephew Wilton Lewis, all of whom supported her and loved her through her illness, and her faithful Lab mix, Radley.
In lieu of memorials, the family believes that Sandy, sharing her mother's practice of caring for others, would want to encourage everyone to schedule regular colonoscopies and physical check-ups and to support LGBTQ+ rights and causes that ensure the safety and dignity of all working people.
There will be a celebration of Sandy's life at a future date. If you can offer creative suggestions for this gathering or would like to receive information about attending, please email
