Scott Eugene Ackermann, age 61, passed away at Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska on May 9th, 2025.
Harvey and Rita (Einspahr) Ackermann welcomed Scott into this world on January 3rd, 1964. Born and raised in McCook he was always looking for adventure and making friends in the process. Playing baseball, delivering newspapers and sometimes causing a ruckus earned him the nickname “Spanky.”
Scott graduated from McCook High School with the class of 1982; this is where he also met the love of his life Karen Vontz. They were wed on December 4, 1982, and to that union they were blessed with three children: Shayla, Mindy and Brad.
Scott was an avid hunter and fisherman. Taking his kids and grandkids and passing along life lessons or working on the next big fish/hunt trip with his best of buddies. He enjoyed being home the most, spending all his free time at the family cabin at Red Willow Lake. You could always find him with a “cold one” on the lawn mower, relaxing on the deck or starting the fire for the next cream can party. The kids knew him as the pontoon captain, always ready to take them out on the water. When he wasn’t at the cabin he was always tinkering and working on something. From the cars he loved in his childhood to the cars his grandkids needed fixed and the homes we always found to remodel. He was their handyman and anchor, always there when needed. Scott loved to watch golf and NASCAR, the #88’s biggest fan. His favorite color was flannel, and he always had his sidekicks Sammie and Cookie trailing behind his feet.
Scott was an operations manager for agricultural irrigation systems at OTR Wheel and Engineering in McCook for 23 years. He had served as a member of the Plains Sportsman Pheasants Forever Chapter 350 for several years. He gave back to the community by organizing the Youth Mentor Hunting Program activities every year.
Scott is proceeded in death by his parents, Harvey (2020) and Rita (1991)
Those left to miss Scott dearly are his wife Karen Ackermann of McCook, NE; children Shayla (Brendon) Malcolm and their children Landon, Addyson and Berkley of McCook, NE, Mindy Ackermann (John Hernandez) and their children Briauna, Bryndan and Bryson of Kearney, NE and Brad (Katie) Ackermann and their children Braelynn, Carter and Ruby of Kearney, NE and one brother Mark Ackermann of McCook, NE; extended family, in-laws and friends.
Memorials are suggested to the Plains Sportsman Chapter 350 Pheasants Forever in care of Carpenter Breland Funeral Home P.O. Box 476 McCook, NE 69001. Funds will be used to sponsor lifetime hunting and fishing permits for youth in our area in his memory.
