Scott Hasler

Scott Garner Hasler, 98, formerly of Vandalia Illinois, passed away at 11:08 p.m. on Friday, March 17, 2023, at home in Gilbert Arizona.
A Graveside Service will be held at 3:15 PM, Saturday, May 06, 2023, at Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia with Rev. Joe Lawson officiating. Military Rites accorded by Brownstown VFW Post 9770. Mr. Hasler was born at home on June 27, 1924, in Vandalia, the son of Robert O. and Hulda V. (Garner) Hasler. After his mother's passing in 1929, he and his siblings were raised by their father and adoptive mother Celia (Schenker) Hasler.
Scott was a 1942 graduate of Vandalia High School. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, in which he served during World War II. Scott volunteered for flight training, during which he received training in single-engine and multi-engine aircraft. Having completed his flight training in the top 10% of his class, he was offered the option to be commissioned as a Marine officer at 19 and received his Navy wings.
Scott married his high school sweetheart Helen Maxine Culbertson in 1943, whom he had dated since he was 14. Scott and Helen had three children: Scott Jr., James and Martha.
After the war, Scott received his degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana in Aviation Psychology. During this time, Scott also became a licensed certified aircraft mechanic, received his instructor rating in meteorology and aircraft engines, and started the glider club which designed and built their own gliders. Scott went on to enjoy an incredible career in the aerospace industry which took the family to Baltimore Maryland and eventually the San Fernando Valley in California.
Having been preceded in death by his three children and wife, he is survived by six grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
