Sharon Evans Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home on Feb. 10, 2026.
Sharon Rose Evans, 83, entered the presence of Jesus on January 30, 2026. Her life was marked by deep faith and joyful service to others through Versailles United Methodist Church, and more than 50 years of ministry at Kentucky United Methodist Children's Homes (KyUMH).

A graduate of Austin Peay University, Miss Sharon began her work at KyUMH in 1965 at age 23, when she began her lifelong calling. For 52 years, she served as librarian, preschool teacher, secretary, and postal clerk. She taught Sunday school at Versailles United Methodist Church for 50 years. In her testimony she wrote, "Jesus loves children… He sent me to a children's home to minister to them!"

As a 60 year member of Versailles United Methodist Church, Miss Sharon was involved in a variety of ministries. She led children's church, VBS programs, and was very active in the Prayer and Praise Group. Miss Sharon was a dedicated member of the Cornerstones group at church.

She was extremely proud of her service to the United Methodist Women. She served as a member of the Estelle Crews church circle and was active on the UMW district and conference levels. Miss Sharon was especially proud of serving as the historian for the UMW.

Miss Sharon was known for her bright spirit, adorable giggle, daily "word of the day," encouraging acrostics, and her thoughtful gifts-especially "encourage mints" and handmade potholders.

Born June 28, 1942, in Detroit, MI, she was the daughter of Thomas Joseph and Virginia Mae Brown Evans. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Thomas Joseph Starr; her stepmother, Leonore Evans; her grandmother, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Evans Brown; and her dear friend, Mary Nealis.

She is lovingly remembered by her Versailles UMC and Wesley Covenant Fellowship church families; her KyUMH family; her brother, Larry Marshall Starr (Linda); and her sister in law, Anne Starr. Her legacy is one of kindness, faithfulness, and love for God and others.

Services will be February 21 at Versailles United Methodist Church, 230 Paynes Mill Rd, Versailles, KY, with visitation from 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m., followed by a 12:00 p.m. service and reception. The service will be conducted by Pastor William Herndon and Robert Kjelland. Attendees are invited to wear red, her favorite color. The Service will be available for anyone unable to attend in person on YouTube, Sharon Evans Memorial. Memorial gifts may be made to KyUMH, P.O. Box 930, Nicholasville, KY 40340.
