Sheila Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy on Dec. 3, 2025.
Sheila J. Smith was born on December 2, 1954, in Newark, New Jersey to her late mother, Shirley Johnson-Outcalt, and her father, Harry Outcalt. At age 15, she moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, settling in the Hill District with her grandmother and uncles. It was there that she built the community, friendships, and family foundation that shaped the rest of her life.

Sheila was a proud member of Schenley High School's Class of 1972. She later earned her Medical Assistant certificate from the Western School of Business and worked in the medical field for several years, caring for others with the same generosity she extended in every part of her life.

In 1972, she welcomed her first child, her beloved son Charles "Slugger" Outcalt, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her loving children Michelle "Chelle" Outcalt, Joseph "Boudie" Smith III, Maurice "Reci" Smith (Shea), and Loniece "Minkey" Spence. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren: Charles "Chuckie" Outcalt, NeChelle "Nannie" Jackson, Kenyce "Niecy" Johnson, Joseph "JoJo" Smith, Joselyn "Jocey" Smith, Nala "Baby" Blue, Solomon "Solo" Smith, Mauriana Smith, and Silas Smith; her great-grandchildren Aubriana Outcalt and Omen Outcalt; and her grand-pets Bella, Rocky, and Clifford.

Family was Sheila's greatest joy, and she played an integral, loving role in helping to raise her grandchildren. She did this with immense pride and without ever asking for anything in return. Pouring into them brought her purpose, laughter, and fulfillment, and her presence shaped their lives in meaningful, unforgettable ways.

Sheila was the undeniable life of the party. Music filled her soul, and her collection was a source of joy and pride. She loved to dance-especially showing off her signature move, "the dog"-and her bold, mischievous sense of humor could make a whole room blush and burst into laughter. Bringing joy to others was one of her greatest gifts.

Above all, Sheila was a giver. If she knew your name, she considered you a friend. Her door was always open, and whatever she had, she shared generously. Whether you needed a hot meal, a warm place to sleep, or simply someone to listen, Sheila was your person. Her home was a refuge, her presence a comfort.

She enjoyed scary movies, crime shows, documentaries, and Animal Planet. She loved playing chess, spades, and bingo, and she took great pride in redecorating her home, always adding her own flair and warmth.

Sheila will be remembered for her laughter, her open heart, her radiant spirit, and the deep love she held for her family. She will be profoundly missed and forever cherished.
