Sherrill Dwayne Curtis, as most people knew him as "Dwayne", 89, of Goshen, IN, passed away on January 22, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion to his family, country, and community. Born on September 18, 1935, in Pleasant Plains, Arkansas, to Garland James Curtis and Bertha (Dossett) Curtis, Sherrill grew up in a close-knit family, where he learned the values of hard work, kindness, and perseverance that would define his life.
A man of great character, Sherrill joined the Army and proudly served his country, a commitment that reflected his deep sense of patriotism. His time in the military shaped him into the silent but strong man that he would become-a man who led by example and whose quiet strength was felt by everyone around him. Sherrill's loyalty to his country was matched only by his devotion to his family.
On June 30, 1956, Sherrill married the love of his life, Virginia Louis Fiedler, and together they built a beautiful life. Their union was blessed with three children: Bryon (Diane) Curtis, Gregory (Connie) Curtis, and Tracy (Brian) Mayfield. Sherrill was a loving and devoted father who took great pride in his children's accomplishments, always offering his support with a quiet smile. His love for Virginia was unwavering, and they shared many cherished memories throughout their years together, built on mutual respect, shared laughter, and the deep bond of love.
Sherrill was also a dedicated grandfather, and he found boundless joy in his grandchildren: Drew (Malinda) Curtis, Heather Curtis, Logan Curtis, Bennet Mayfield, Teagan Mayfield, and Mya Wobrock. He reveled in their visits and made it a point to share his wisdom, love, and the simple pleasures of life with them. Whether it was teaching them how to plant a garden, showing them how to use his woodworking tools, or just sharing stories of his life, Sherrill's grandchildren held a special place in his heart.
One of Sherrill's greatest passions was gardening, and he found peace and contentment in tending to his flowers and plants. Spring was his favorite time of year, and he would often marvel at the growth and renewal all around him. His hands, skilled from years of woodworking, would carefully nurture his garden as much as he had nurtured his family. He was always ready with a smile, and his infectious joy for life made everyone around him feel welcome and appreciated.
Though he was a man of few words, Sherrill's presence spoke volumes. His eyes would light up a room, and his silent strength was evident to all who knew him. He was the kind of person who could make you feel at ease without ever having to say much-his kindness, his patience, and his ever-present smile were all that was needed. He believed in letting his actions speak for him, and those actions left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. While his physical presence will be greatly missed, his spirit, his lessons, and his unwavering love will remain with his family and friends forever.
Sherrill was preceded in death by his parents, Garland James Curtis and Bertha (Dossett) Curtis; his siblings, Lyndle Ray Curtis, Lorraine Smith, Imogene McAdams, and Louise Staggs.
Sherrill is survived by his loving wife, Virginia; his children, Bryon (Diane) Curtis, Gregory (Connie) Curtis, and Tracy (Brian) Mayfield; his grandchildren, Drew (Malinda) Curtis, Heather Curtis, Logan Curtis, Bennet Mayfield, Teagan Mayfield, and Mya Wobrock; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the DAV – Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
A visitation will be held on Monday, January 27, 2025, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy,
