Sherry Murphree Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 27, 2026.
Sherry Edgalee Murphree, age 85, of Duncan, Oklahoma, passed away, Wednesday, February 25, (her mother's birthday) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
A funeral service is planned for 1:00 P.M., Saturday, March 7, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Jardine officiating. Interment will follow in the Duncan Municipal Cemetery with David Hammond, Shawn Lockstone, Tom Montgomery, Mark Beny, Mike Phipps, and Bobby Randolph serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Jimmy Jones, Ron Corley, Dr. Bob Schick, and John Ray Green. Arrangements have been entrusted to Whitt Funeral Home.
Sherry was born September, 17, 1940, the daughter of Nell C. (Harrison) and B.W. (Buck) English. Sherry and her brother Bill English were raised in Oklahoma City, where she attended Casady School and Classen High School. In 1958, she moved to Duncan to be closer to her parents and worked as a bookkeeper for CR Anthony Company on Main Street.
Sherry married Vernon Murphree, October 14, 1960 in Duncan, Oklahoma. Together they raised two children, Elaine and Todd. After staying at home with her children while they were in school, Sherry and her neighbor Shirley Richardson opened a popular clothing store, Traditions, in downtown Duncan. They ran the business together for about 20 years.
Sherry loved her family farm in Cox City where she and Vernon spent many lazy summer days enjoying fishing and the little house she renovated and decorated. She especially loved the old metal bridge that still sits over Rush Creek.
As a grandmother, Sherry really shone. From nature walks to imaginative story time, Sherry was the perfect Grandma Sher. She hosted the very best family events making sure each granddaughter had her very favorite food selection. Her holiday table settings and home decor were legendary.
From her childhood dog Wiggles following her to the swimming pool to keep an eye on all the swimming children to various dogs and cats, Sherry loved her animals.
As a longtime member of the Duncan community, she was proud of her home. She and Vernon were known for their New Year's Day football stew and chili parties. Sherry enjoyed OU football and Duncan Demon football. She played bridge and was active in PEO. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Duncan.
She is survived by her daughter Elaine Larsen; son, Todd and wife Teresa; granddaughter, Emily Stack and partner Jeff Crews; granddaughter, Madison Rowen and husband Brian; granddaughter, Cayman Murphree; step-grandson, Barron Brown and his wife Lindsey; great grandchildren: Brooklynn Rowen, Beau Brown, Jackson Brown, and Harrison Brown.
Sherry is preceded in death by her parents, Buck and Nell English; husband, Vernon Murphree; brother, Bill English; and son-in-law, Sam Larsen.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Stephens County Humane Society.
