Shirley Jo “Nan “Compton passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 10, 2025. She was born in Bonne Terre, Missouri, on Sunday, February 3, 1935, to the late Lee Edward and Wilma Ester (Pullen) Leftridge.
After 90 remarkable years in East Bonne Terre, Shirley, affectionately known throughout the community as “the mushroom lady,” passed away surrounded by love. Avid in her passion for mushroom hunting, she spent countless days in the woods, sharing her knowledge and joy with all who knew her.
She was a devoted member of her church, treasuring every activity and fellowship it brought. A lover of sweet treats and a familiar face on her daily walks, she embraced life with energy, joy, and gratitude. She delighted in bird watching, swimming, and even riding jet skis, finding pleasure in both quiet moments of nature and thrilling adventures. A wonderful cook, she filled countless family gatherings with warmth and homemade dishes. Faith was central to her life, and she read her Bible faithfully every day. Above all, spending time with her grandchildren brought her immense joy.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend. Her kindness, humor, and gentle spirit touched many, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the blessing of knowing her.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all of those who privately provided loving care to their mother. Your compassion and support meant more than words can express.
Shirley leaves behind her children, Trudy (Nick) De Blois and Edward “Eddie” Compton; her grandchildren, Jason (Ginger) Compton, Stephanie (Amy) Rawson, Crystal (Bobby Miner) Compton, and Garrett (Lynsey Marler) De Blois; and her great-grandchildren, Zachary (Gina) Compton, Alexander Compton, Trever Compton, Emma Carrow, and Levell Compton. She was also joyfully anticipating the arrival of a new great-grandbaby, Isabella, due to enter the world any day, siblings, Darlene Hardin and Betty Jane Schiller, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She felt blessed to be a guiding hand in her grandson Jason Compton’s life, offering him warmth, wisdom, and unconditional love.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert “Bobby” T. Compton; her daughter, Bobette Redmond; and her brother, Jack Leftridge.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all who provided loving care to their mother, especially Dawn, Sandy, Mary, Brenda and Summer, your compassion and support meant more than words can express. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Gospel Light Free Will Baptist Church in Bonne Terre, Missouri. A visitation in her honor will take place at C.Z.
