William Compton Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Herson Wagner Funeral Home - Ithaca on Dec. 9, 2025.
William R. Compton, 88 of Danby, NY passed away December 6, 2025, with loved ones by his side. William (Bill) was born October 16, 1937 in the town of Candor, NY. He grew up in Berkshire, NY and went to Newark Valley High School where he lettered in football. After High School he worked at Endicott Johnson Shoes until 1961 when he was drafted to serve in the Army where he was trained to be a Chemical Corp Specialist. He returned home to the Berkshire, NY / Richford, NY area in 1963 after being honorably discharged from active duty and started working at Cornell University at the State Grounds Department while remaining on reserve duty until full honorable discharge in 1967. He moved to Newfield, NY in the early 1980's before making Danby, NY home in 1985. He and his wife Sue started Uncle Bill's Antiques while he was still working at Cornell University. He retired from Cornell University in 1998 and made Uncle Bill's Antiques a full-time business. It was rare for him to meet someone he couldn't carry on a conversation with. He didn't show his emotions to most but, you knew it if he liked or cared about you. He taught us to treat everyone, whether they were a business owner, "white collar" or "blue collar" employee the same because they were all simply people and all deserved to be treated with dignity and respect. He was a wonderful & caring dad, grandpa, husband and friend that will be greatly missed. He is predeceased by his wife Susan H. Compton; daughter Melody Compton Libby; parents Robert B. Compton & Gladys Schoonover Compton; sister Bernice M. Compton; brother-in-law Theodore Cunningham; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and several close friends. He is survived by his sister Jean Cunningham of Berkshire, NY; daughter Lorrie K. Compton Martin (James) of Cheney, KS; daughter Laura Heisey of Newfield, NY; son Eric Heisey of Oneida, NY; seven grandchildren: Alexis M. Martin, Lindsay K. Martin, William Heisey, Ethan Heisey, Melodie Ellis Jones, Robert W. Ellis, Christina L. Ellis; 4 great grandchildren; nephew Rocky Cunningham (Pam) of Richford, NY; niece Penny Leonard (Matt) of Berkshire, NY; some cousins; and many friends. Services will be at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his memory to the SPCA or to the Danby Volunteer Fire Department.
