Shirley Edwards Obituary

Shirley Jean Edwards, born August 5, 1947, in Birmingham, passed away on February 1, 2026.
Shirley was raised in Tarrant and later in Hialeah, Florida, and was a graduate of Tarrant High School. She devoted more than four decades to a successful career in the insurance industry, beginning in 1966 and continuing until her retirement in 2009. During that time, she worked with respected firms, including Gurley and McGriff, Seibels & Williams, building lasting professional relationships through her dedication and integrity.
Shirley was married for 57 years to the love of her life, David Edwards, who preceded her in death in 2024. Together, Shirley and David shared a wonderful life filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures. They lived for a time in Arlington, Texas, where they enjoyed visits to the Fort Worth Stockyards, hiking, and attending sporting events. Lifelong Dallas Cowboys fans, they rarely missed a chance to cheer on their team. Shirley also cherished fall trips to Gatlinburg, creating many fond memories along the way.
In addition to her professional career, Shirley was a knowledgeable and passionate antiques dealer. She operated a shop at the "Red Barn" in Gardendale for many years, continuing her love for antiques well into her retirement.
Shirley was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Tarrant, where her church family was a source of love and joy. A compassionate and kind woman, Shirley lived out her Christian faith through acts of service, generosity, and genuine care for others.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Edwards; her parents, Ruby Icelow Poarch and Asa Hopkins; her sister Lana Connell and brother in law David Connell; and her nephew Alex Hopkins.
Shirley is survived by her sisters, Rhonda Hopkins and Amanda Hopkins Burillo; her nephew Tommy Melvin; her nieces Michele Armstrong, Alysa Meyer, Alayne Whitaker, and Alyson Medina; and numerous great nieces and great nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved fur baby, Pat.
Shirley Jean Edwards will be remembered for her gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and the love she shared so freely with family, friends, and all who knew her. She will be greatly missed. Memorial service to take place in early Spring, details to follow.

Shirley was a kind soul, soft spoken, faithful, and loyal. She possessed a gentle, calm and quiet demeanor with a heart of gold. Shirley was thoughtful and nurturing with a keen gift of listening. She was gracious, steady, humble, and she always spoke with a voice as soft as the morning dew and deeply calming. From the moment I met her, it was this character than made me feel at ease and welcomed. She had a subtle presence that brought peace, comfort and calmness. We all miss your presence.
Love you always,
Madeline
