Shirley L. Hamel, 84, of Concord, NH, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 24, 2024, following a brief illness.
Shirley was born in York, ME, on November 25, 1939, to Howard and Barbara (Winningham) Gunnison. She was a graduate of Traip Academy in Kittery, ME, and flourished in her role as homemaker, raising three wonderful sons. She resided in Pittsburg, NH, for many years where she and her husband Fred were very active in the community. They received the Citizens of the Year award for their passion and willingness to help the residents and organizations in town. Together, Fred and Shirley owned and operated two local businesses, before eventually retiring and relocating to the Concord area to be closer to family. In her spare time Shirley enjoyed tending to her flower gardens, visiting lighthouses and beaches across New England, and socializing with family and friends. Shirley’s door was always open and she always made sure everyone was fed and warm.
Shirley is survived by her sons Mike Remick and wife Kim of Gilmanton Iron Works, Tom Remick of Concord, and Dave Remick and wife Lynda of Bow; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchild; her sister Carol Drew of Kittery, ME; her brother, Bobby Gunnison of Vermont; several nieces and nephews, including Cindy Whitman of Quincy, MA, with whom she shared a special bond; and 3 stepchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband Fred, she was predeceased by her grandson Michael Remick and her brother Howard Gunnison.
The family will receive visitors Saturday, November 2, 2024, 2:00-3:00pm at the Cremation Society of NH, 172 King Street in Boscawen, NH. A Memorial Service will begin at 3pm in the funeral home chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to United Methodist Women and Men, make checks payable to Farnham UMWM and mail to PO Box 306, Pittsburg, NH 03592.
