Shirley Barnhardt Hurlocker, 77, died peacefully Monday, August 12th, at her residence surrounded by her family following a period of declining health. A celebration of Shirley’s life will begin at 3 pm on Saturday, September 7th at Cold Springs Global Methodist Church, 2550 Cold Springs Road, Concord, with the Rev. Dr. Cliff Wall officiating and her niece, Jannette Kluttz delivering her eulogy.
The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 1 pm on September 7th. At all other times the family will be at her home. A native of Cabarrus County, Shirley was the daughter of the late William O. Barnhardt Sr. and Essie Mae Burris Barnhardt. She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Alvin Ray Hurlocker of 50 years, two older brothers Archie and Troy Barnhardt and a sister in-law Rebecca Barnhardt.
A 1965 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School, Shirley worked for Kerr Bleachery and Time Warner cable where she retired. In later years, after retirement, she worked as an assistant at Mount Pleasant High School in the special needs class.
Shirley was a lifetime member of Cold Springs Methodist Church where she served as a youth leader, youth choir director, stick kid ministry director, and she loved to sing in the choir. She worked many hours and years with the church’s annual BBQ and she loved to help with the Girls Scouts.
She is survived by her brother, William O. Barnhardt Jr.; sisters, Kathy Flowe (Mike), Joyce Allmon (Dexter); sisters in-law, Carol Barnhardt, Lila Barnhardt; two sons, Tim Hurlocker (Sandra) and David Hurlocker (Jeanna), a daughter, Brenda H. Feathers (Bill); grandchildren, Nichole Cook (Josh), Kelby Hurlocker, Meredith Spradley (Jarin), Chelsey Hurlocker, Garrett Hurlocker (Katelyn), Andrew Stewart, Anthony Stewart (Kelsi), Conner Hurlocker, Gary Feathers, Taylor Feathers, James Crowell (Haylee), Jonathan Burgess, Jacobi Burgess (Ariel), Jaryn Hyatt (KC), Jaci Burgess; great-grandchildren, Xander Spradley, Jasper Cook, Easton Denham, Raylee Cook, AJ Spradley, Annabelle Beaudoin, Ayden Padillal, Makenna Crowell, Sadie Crowell, James Crowell, Nathan Burgess, Oliver Burgess, Austin Burgess, and Adalyn Burgess and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff of Hospice of Cabarrus County for the in-home care given to our mom.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cold Springs GMC Replenish the Well fund, 2550 Cold Springs Road, Concord, NC, 28025, or the Self Contained Special Needs Class at Mount Pleasant High School, 700 Walker Rd., Mt. Pleasant NC 28124.
