Shirley Swan, 81 of Promise City, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at her home.
Shirley Swan was born on April 13, 1943 to Newt & Hannah Mae Thomas in Centerville, Iowa. She was the youngest of 13 kids. She received her education from Centerville High School.
On March 4, 1962 Shirley married the love of her life, Marvin Swan. She and Marvin welcomed three beautiful children; Shalita, Tom and Tim. Not only was she the best mom to her own kids, but her grandchildren absolutely adored her as she did them. Over the years they also took a few kids in and treated them as their own.
Shirley enjoyed sitting in her upstairs kitchen for hours watching her grandkids play outside. Every time they would come visit Grandma and Grandpa's, she made sure to send them home with a handful of candy despite the parents' best efforts to say no thank you. She would tell them to hush and what grandma said was the law around her house. There was never a shortage of candy and sweets just in case someone would stop by. She also absolutely loved going to Branson with her daughters and nieces.
Shirley worked at McGraw Edison, Coast to Coast, Walmart and owned the ice cream shop in the Lake Center Mall before opening her own restaurant with her daughter in Promise City.
Shirley was quite possibly the world's best cook and everyone knew it. Holidays were always a family favorite because you knew Shirley had been preparing for days.
13 was Shirleys lucky number. She was the 13th child, she was born on Friday the 13th, She was 13 pounds at birth and she had 13 letters in her name – due to not having a middle name.
Left to cherish the memories Shirley left behind are her husband of 62 years, Marvin Swan; children, Shalita (Bill) Sales, Tom (Sonya) Swan and Tim (Tonya) Swan; grandchildren, Samantha (Nick) Smith, Amanda Swan, Britni McCarty, Hannah (Frank) Wireman, Brynlee Swan, Bristyn Swan, Gannon Swan, Gage Swan, Trayton Smith and Tatum Smith; great-grandchildren, Lila Swan, Saylor Swan, Beckett Smith, Oliver Wireman and Walker Swan; brother, Larry (Evelyn) Thomas; brother-in-law, Ronald Swan; sisters-in-laws, Dorothy Thomas and Norma Thomas; longtime friends, Ron Smeal, Scott Merrill, Alan Hansen and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Newt and Hannah Mae Thomas; siblings, Maxine Fenton, Irene Sales, Elaine Crowe, Dorothy Chellos, Patricia Wager, Sandy Thomas, Robert Burkhiser, LaVern Thomas, Lynn Thomas, Laurel (Gene) Thomas, Wendell Thomas and infant brother, Noah Thomas; grandson, TJ Swan.
