Sidney H. Ames, Sr., 85, passed away at the W.W. Backus Hospital on Sept 3, 2022. He was born in Oneco, CT, a son to the late Evelyn R. (Gelinas) and Howard E. Ames. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Cecile D. (Privé) Ames. He was preceded in death by his brother Harold L. Ames of Brooklyn, and two sisters; Evelyn J. Cheverier of Stafford Springs and Brenda A. Charbonneau also of Stafford Springs.
Sid owned and operated a sawmill and a chainsaw shop with his father for many years. After the death of his father, he became a prolific carpenter. His skills for both fine carpentry and building homes allowed him to run his own business. A business that employed many family members and friends. He supported his church (St. Augustine's) by raising funds for the building. Sid loved his family, his friends, all of Canterbury and the Yankees. Sid's family believes his heart was pinstriped. He loved being outside gardening. He loved his country. He believed a true measure of a person's life is what you give to others. Sid lived life with an open heart. If you needed help, he would always be there. Friends of which he had so very many, were always part of the Ames clan. Sid had a twinkle in his eye and usually some prank he was willing to inflict on you and then the huge laugh. And if you were lucky enough to have Sid Sr. standing there, odds are Sid Jr. would be standing right on side of him. Truly the best pairing God ever made. Sid made sure his family knew the value in hard work, integrity and honesty; sometimes he was "the uncle with sound advice". Sid operated on pure instinct and always love.
We love you Dad, always have, always will.
In addition to his wife Cecile, he is survived by his children: daughter Julia Giuliano, and husband Nicholas Giuliano, grandson Sebastian and granddaughter Sydney. His daughter Cheryl Christensen, granddaughters Julia and Kara Sykes and husband Lewis Sykes. His son Sidney H. Ames Jr. and wife Carleen Ames, grandson Rendell and wife Danielle, and granddaughter Shayla.
There will be Mass of Christian Burial held on Wednesday Sept. 7, 2022 at St. Augustine Church in Canterbury, CT at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in Carey Cemetery, Canterbury. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Canterbury Fire Department. www.doughertybrosfuneralhome.com
