POWELLSVILLE, NC - Silas William McKeel, Jr., lovingly known to friends and family as Billy, passed away suddenly on May 26, 2025, at the age of 82, while performing one of his routine and generous acts.
Born on August 2, 1942, in Hertford County, North Carolina, Billy was a man of many talents and interests. He shared a passion for woodworking and had an admiration for antiques that reflected his appreciation for craftsmanship and history. A die-hard NC State Wolfpack fan, he loved college football and could often be found cheering enthusiastically during games.
Known for his kind heart and humorous spirit, Billy loved "cutting up" and joking with friends and family. He was a man who wore many hats, constantly helping others and leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. His greatest joys included spending time with his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nurturing their lives with love.
Billy dedicated many years of his life to a career as a Supervisor in Packing at Easco Aluminum Co., where his guidance and leadership were valued and respected. A committed member of the Masons, he enriched his community through service and fellowship. As a Former Master and current president of the Roanoke-Chowan Shriner Club, he devoted his life to the order, embodying the spirit of brotherhood and charity. Billy's legacy of kindness, humor, and dedication to family and community will be remembered and cherished by all who had the honor of knowing him.
He is preceded in death by his cherished mother, Eva Mallard McKeel, his father, Silas William McKeel, Sr., his dear wife Marjorie Pierce McKeel, and his sister Linda McKeel. Billy's memory will be cherished by his surviving family: stepchildren John Isaac Futrell and wife Debra of Murfreesboro; Judy Godwin and husband Richard of Raleigh; and Robert "Robbie" Futrell and wife Melody of Powellsville. He also leaves behind his treasured grandchildren: Jonathan Futrell and wife Debbie, Brent Futrell, Heather Haste, Justin Futrell and wife Kristin, Ashley Davis and husband Matt; and great-grandchildren: Dustin and wife Lauren, Katie, Jessica, Reid, Eva Rose, Jackson, and Ada Mae. His special friend and neighbor, Vicky Piland, will miss his company dearly.
A funeral service with Masonic Rites will be held on May 29, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie Chapel, with Rev. Walter Johnston, III, officiating. A private burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, NC.
