Sophi Rebecca Weitz

OLD BRIDGE – SOPHI REBECCA WEITZ passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at Mira Vie Assisted Living in East Brunswick, NJ. She was 90 years old.

Sophi was born in Brooklyn, NY, to Hyman and Kate (née Sheier) Friedman. She resided in Manhattan until 1966, when she and her husband George moved to Oakland, NJ. There they lived a full life and raised their sons Adam and Paul. Sophi loved Oakland!

Sophi graduated Suma Cum Laude from Ramapo College as an adult student. She was immensely proud of this accomplishment. The bulk of her professional career was in personnel recruiting. She enjoyed, and was good at, it. Her last position was with Leslie Waterworks, where she worked until age 80. As with everything she did, she was enthusiastic and successful.

Sophi participated in life and enjoyed a huge variety of cultural, social and athletic activities, including tennis, modern dance, working out and hiking. She loved music, art, museums, theater, fashion and film. She was active in Jewish life, and The Oakland Jewish Center was central to her identity and community.

Sophi is predeceased by her husband of 59 years, George Weitz, who passed in 2017.

Surviving are her sons, Adam Weitz of New York, NY, and Paul Weitz of Chicago, IL; her grandson, Elijah; her siblings, Neil, Rina and Florence and an extended family who loved her dearly.

She will be missed.
