Spencer Davis Armour, Jr., 91, of Silsbee, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, April 15, 2025. He was born April 25, 1933, in Sabine Parish, Louisiana, to Mary Goss Armour and Spencer Davis Armour, Sr.
He was the oldest of three boys and grew up with a deep love for the outdoors and a strong work ethic that carried him throughout his life.
A self-made businessman, Spencer founded and operated Armour J. Auto Salvage for 50 years. It all started when he bought a wrecked 1953 Oldsmobile from its owner for $16.50 in 1960. From there, he went on to invest every nickel and minute in a risky business venture that became one of the largest auto salvage yards this side of Waco.
Spencer took great pride in his work and building a life rooted in dedication, community, and integrity. He loved being a resident of Silsbee and sharing his success through his generosity with those in the community. He served on the Silsbee City Council in the 1970s and was a board member at First National Bank of Silsbee. He was also a longtime member of First Baptist Church Silsbee.
Spencer had a deep appreciation for nature. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors-especially if it involved operating machinery. Whether he was bush hogging a field or bulldozing a path through the woods, he was happiest under an open sky. In his younger years, he could often be found on the golf course at Silsbee Country Club, enjoying the game and the camaraderie.
He never met a stranger and made friends wherever he went. His quick wit and easy smile left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Spencer was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years, Sammie Cole Armour; his parents; and his brothers, Bob Armour and Jimmy Armour. Survivors include his son, Spencer Armour, III and his wife, Becky, of Midland; daughter, Amy Armour Montanari and her husband, Joe, of Beaumont; grandchildren, Emily Serold and her husband, Craig, of Dallas; Spencer "Davis" Armour, IV of Fort Worth; Madison Montanari of Dallas; and Maret Montanari of Beaumont; great-grandchildren, Claire, Sam, and Gracie Serold; Spencer "Quinn" V and Violet Armour; and numerous extended family members and dear friends.
Our family would like to express our endless gratitude to Virgie for the love and compassion she showed Spencer in his final years. She was Sammie's caregiver starting in 2019 and began caring for Spencer soon after Sammie's passing and became his best friend and confidante. Virgie will always be a special member of our family.
A great big thank you to the Silsbee Police Department Officers Rogers, Brown, and Ramirez for their kindness after Spencer's passing along with the lights and siren display as they left his home. He would have loved the special sendoff. Our appreciation and thanks also go out to Heart-to-Heart Hospice of Jasper for their guidance, compassion, and exceptional care.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Broussard's, located at 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee, on Monday, April 21, 2025. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Interment and a celebration of life will take place immediately after the service at Hardin Memorial Park, Silsbee
