Sr. Cecile Provost, CSC (Sr. Mary Denis of the Redeemer), passed away August 27, 2025.
She was born on January 14, 1941, in Manchester to Lafayette and Irene (Lavigne) Provost. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Holy Cross in 1958 and pronounced her final vows on August 15, 1965.
Sr. Cecile graduated from St. George High School, then from Notre Dame College both in Manchester. She later earned a Master of Arts degree in Religious Education from Emmanuel College.
She ministered as an elementary and secondary school teacher in New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts. She was Director of Religious Education (DRE) in New Hampshire and in Maine, as well as principal of elementary schools in New Hampshire. She worked tirelessly and succeeded in getting a school in New Hampshire accredited.
In 2014, Sr. Cecile retired and volunteered to transport and accompany the sisters to appointments. In 2022, she moved to Holy Cross Health Center in Manchester.
For sixty years, Sr. Cecile Provost and Sr. Cecile Tremblay lived and worked together as a team. Sr. Cecile Provost, principal and teacher, became affectionately called “Sister ABC” by the students, and Sister Cecile Tremblay, the music teacher, was called “Sister Do, Re, Mi”. Creative and apt titles for both!
Sr. Cecile is predeceased by her parents and her siblings Madeleine Provost, Albert Provost and George Provost. She is survived by her sister, Denise Provost Morin and several nieces and nephews.
