Stanley H. Hahn, 91, of Belvidere, NJ - formerly of Washington, NJ - passed away peacefully on July 27, with his loving wife, Lois, by his side.
Stan was born in Easton, PA, to Eva (Steinmetz) and Stanley H. Hahn, Sr. He was a proud graduate of Washington High School, Class of 1951, where he met his high school sweetheart and devoted wife, Lois (Pence). Stan and Lois celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this July. Stan was a loving and caring father, and together he and Lois raised two children, Scott and Kay. His family was always his greatest joy; he spent countless hours attending many endeavors - sports, marching band, concerts, and plays - of his two children, seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Stan was his family's biggest and proudest cheerleader.
Stan served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1956, including an 18-month tour of duty in Korea with the 712th Transportation Railway Operations Battalion. He was in charge of the diesel train engine service traveling with equipment and supplies from Pusan to the 38th Parallel (front lines). Stan's most memorable duty was the inspection of trains from Operation Glory, the name given to the repatriation of war dead from both sides of the Korean War following the 1953 armistice.
After his military service, Stan pursued a career with The New Jersey Bell Telephone Company (later AT&T and Bell Atlantic) in New Village, NJ, as an installer and repairman. He worked his way to various management positions, including repair supervisor and installation control center supervisor, in various locations in the Morristown, NJ district. Stan could often be found standing at his desk with a phone in each ear, working tirelessly for "Ma Bell" when landlines were the only form of communication. After 35 years of dedicated service, Stan retired with distinction in 1991. To remain busy, Stan then took a job with the Warren Hills School District and spent the next nine years enjoying his role as a school bus driver and a member of the grounds maintenance crew.
Stan was always active in his community of Washington, NJ. He was a proud member of several organizations, including Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6071, American Legion Post 103, and the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks. He served as President of the Lions Club (1977-1978), was a member and councilman at St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Stan was a Life Member of the Telcom Pioneers of America Verizon. An avid outdoorsman in his younger years, Stan was active with the Lehigh Valley Canoe Club in Easton, PA and the Anderson Rod and Gun Club.
Stan and Lois loved to travel. In addition to their many adventures to Cape Cod and the New England states, they took memorable trips with their family to various destinations. They especially loved Disney World, the beach and mountain trips with all their grandchildren, and embarked on several cross-country adventures in their "Big Bug" mini-van, visiting 49 states. Stan and Lois enjoyed dining out with friends and family and were well known at their favorite local restaurants. Stan was an amazing storyteller, always quick with a joke. His boundless humor and calm demeanor endeared him to everyone he met. He kept in touch with many friends from all stages of his life. Stan was truly a treasure and touched the lives of everyone he encountered.
After residing in Washington, NJ their entire lives, Stan and Lois moved in 2004 to the retirement community of Brookfield Glen in Belvidere, NJ, where they made many new friends and happily resided for more than 20 years. While there, Stan became a member of the Building and Grounds Committee of the condo association and served as Captain of his building.
During the last seven months of his life, Stan resided with Lois under the compassionate care of Mira Vie at Brookfield Assisted Living in Belvidere, NJ. Stan's entire family is eternally grateful for the love and support provided by so many at Mira Vie.
Stan was preceded in death by his cherished son, S. Scott Hahn; his parents, Eva and Stanley Hahn Sr.; his little sister, Virginia "Ginny" Mae Hahn; and his loving Aunt Anna Steinmetz Ford.
Stan is survived by his wife Lois, daughter Kay (Hahn) Kerr and son-in-law David Kerr; daughter-in-law Robin (Lutz) Hahn; seven grandchildren and their spouses: Nathan (Katie) Hahn, Christina (Justin) Kline, Bryan (Alison) Hahn, Breanna (Blake) Timochenko, Jasen Kerr, Ian (Jackie) Kerr, and Bryn-Erin Kerr; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Interment will be private at Belvidere Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 264, Washington, NJ 07882. Please note your donation "In Memory of Stanley H. Hahn."
