After bravely battling a long illness, Stephen M. Curran, a beloved family member, and a respected member of the Local 4 Operating Engineers, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025, with his loving family by his side at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston.
Born on May 29, 1959, in
Holyoke, Massachusetts, Stephen's journey began in a town known for its vibrant community and rich history. Raised in Canton, Stephen was a proud graduate of Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, where he developed a strong foundation of values that would guide him throughout his life. His educational journey laid the groundwork for his future, leading him to a distinguished career as a member of the Local 4 Operating Engineers. Stephen's skilled hands and keen mind took him across the United States and to distant lands such as Africa, Korea, and Saudi Arabia where he meticulously fixed cranes and machinery, ensuring safety and efficiency on numerous critical projects.
Stephen's work was more than a profession; it was a testament to his commitment to excellence and his contribution to the world of engineering. His legacy within the industry is marked by the many structures that stand tall because of his expertise and dedication, including his work on the Big Dig.
Beyond his professional life, Stephen was a man of the outdoors. His love for the Maine woods was profound, and he found solace in the tranquil beauty of nature. An avid hunter, he understood the balance of life and respected the wilderness that provided him with so much joy. His passion for the sea was equally strong, captaining a tuna fishing boat with a skill that only comes from a true connection with the ocean. Stephen's love for gardening was another facet of his bond with the earth, as he cultivated tomatoes, cucumbers and a variety of vegetables, sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends.
At the heart of Stephen's world were his family and his cherished grandchildren. A devoted father to Dr. Erin Carey and her husband Dr. Jeremy Carey of Woburn, Ashley Nandi and her husband Avi of West Chester, PA, and Kaylie Curran of Austin, Texas, he instilled in them the values of hard work, perseverance, and love. His grandchildren Aveline, Sofia, Emersyn Carey, and Rohan Nandi were the lights of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Stephen's role as a grandfather was one of his greatest joys, and his influence will live on in their lives.
The son of Marilyn Curran of Canton and the late Michael Curran, Stephen was a caring and supportive son who honored his parents throughout his life. He was a loyal brother to Maurice Curran and his wife Sue of Upper Saddle River, NJ, Alison Hashimoto and her husband John of Atlanta, GA, and Megan Curran of Canton.
Stephen's life was also enriched by the companionship of his four legged friend, Ruby, who was a constant source of joy and friendship.
Stephen M. Curran lived a life marked by love, service, and a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures. His legacy is a tapestry woven with the lives he touched, the work he accomplished, and the natural world he so dearly loved. As we celebrate his life, we remember a man who stood strong like the cranes he repaired, yet gentle like the gardens he tended. Stephen's memory will be treasured forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Relatives and friends invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. Oscar Romero Church Canton Friday February 20th at 10:00 am. Burial private.
