Stephen Michael DeVarney, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away far too soon after a courageous battle with ALS, diagnosed in the fall of 2024. He was 64 years old.
Born on February 17, 1961, in Boston, Massachusetts, Steve was the son of the late Phyllis and Bernard DeVarney. He grew up in South Burlington, Vermont, on Elizabeth Street-where countless memories and lifelong friendships were formed. A proud "airport kid," Steve carried the spirit of his neighborhood and its community with him throughout his life.
Steve's passion for sports began early and never waned. As a standout athlete at South Burlington High School, he was inducted into the inaugural Hall of Fame class-an early recognition of his lifelong dedication. He went on to attend Dean Junior College, where he played football, a game that would become a lasting bond between him and his sons. Whether on the field or from the sidelines, Steve's love for the sport remained constant.
In 1986, Steve met the love of his life, Tracy, and the two were married on October 22, 1988. Together they built a life full of love, laughter, and devotion to family. They especially cherished their time together in Ocean Ridge, Florida, where they returned each year to relax by the beach and soak in the ocean air. Steve stood faithfully by Tracy's side through three cancer diagnoses, offering his unwavering love and strength. In his final chapter, she returned that devotion, becoming his tireless and compassionate caretaker when he needed it most.
Steve was a proud father to Taylor, Morgan and Connor. One of his greatest joys was watching his children compete in sports. He was always their biggest fan and rarely missed a game. His role as a father brought him immense pride and purpose, and his love and support never wavered.
Steve shared a close bond with his three sisters-Renee, Patty, and Michelle-whose love and support were always there for him. They affectionately called him 'Bro,' a nickname that reflected their lifelong closeness and playful bond. He also grew especially close to his brother-in-law Mark over the years, and the two shared an easy, brotherly friendship. Steve was lucky to have two of his best friends, Kevin and Jimmy, by his side for decades. Their relationship-built on loyalty, laughter, and countless shared memories-was a constant and meaningful part of his life.
He adored being "Pepe" to his granddaughter Lennon. Though their time together was brief, the love they shared was lasting, and his presence will always be felt in her life.
Outside of family life, Steve had many passions that brought him peace and joy. He had a deep love for fishing, with countless hours spent on Vermont's rivers-his favorite spot being beneath the bridge in Waterbury. He also enjoyed cooking and grilling, often bringing people together around the table with a great meal and quiet generosity. The ocean held a special place in his heart, offering him a sense of calm and connection that he carried throughout his life.
Steve is survived by his devoted wife, Tracy DeVarney; his children and their partners-Taylor DeVarney, Morgan and Curtis Garrow, and Connor and Sarah DeVarney; his cherished granddaughter, Lennon Garrow; and his soon-to-arrive granddaughter, lovingly known as baby girl DeVarney. He is also survived by his three sisters and their spouses: Renee DeVarney, Patty and Mark Critchlow and Michelle and Gary Appleby, along with many extended family members and dear friends.
Known for his tough exterior and soft heart, Steve had a special place in his life for family, football, the ocean, and stray dogs who needed a home. He lived with heart, fought with courage, and loved everything he had. He will be deeply missed.

So sad to see that you are no longer with us. I haven't seen you since I left South Burlington in 1982 but often think about the times we spent together running the streets around the airport. Playing kick the can on your street and football at the airport field. You were always a good friend and will be missed by all that knew you. See you on the other side my friend. Dana Blondin

Very sad to hear Steve passed away. We were 'Airport Kids' together. Besides being the nicest man you would ever want to meet, Steve was one of the most gifted athletes, ever, in the State of Vermont. Our deepest condolences and sympathies to the Devarney family. Rest in Peace, Steve.
