Stephen King Obituary

Stephen Barry King, age 84, of Media, PA, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Steve was the son of the late Robert S. King, Jr. and Dorothy King (née Warner).

After graduating from Media High School in 1958, Steve began his career at State Farm Insurance, where he worked for three years before joining United Airlines as a ramp serviceman. Over the next 38 years, Steve rose through the ranks at United, eventually becoming the Managing Director of the Philadelphia Airport flight kitchen.

Following his retirement from United, Steve pursued his passion for security work. He spent seven years providing security at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, then took on various part-time security roles-his favorite being with the Ridley Township Police Department, where he served from 2005 until 2019. Steve officially retired at the age of 79. He loved sharing stories from his working years-tales of celebrities he met during his airline days and some quite colorful accounts from his time in security. His storytelling and impeccable sense of humor were unmatched. Making people laugh brought him genuine joy, and few could match Steve's delivery of a joke.

Steve was also an active member of his community. He belonged to the Aston-Middletown Jaycees, served as President of the Pennell Manor Civic Association, and was a proud 50-year member of Delaware County Field & Stream.

One of Steve's proudest civic achievements was his service on the Penn-Delco School Board, where he served for 11 years-10 of those as President, earning bipartisan support. In this role, he felt he'd been given a great privilege to have been able to hand each of his children their high school diplomas.

Steve had many hobbies. He was a motorcycle enthusiast who logged over 150,000 miles, a runner, a cyclist, a car lover (owning over 62 cars in his lifetime), and a devoted dog owner. Steve owned and loved many dogs throughout his life, but none held a place in his heart quite like Toby, his beloved 210 lb. English Mastiff.

But above all, Steve's greatest joy was his family.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Blanche (née Hazlett), whom he met in high school and married in 1961. They shared 64 wonderful years together. Steve is also survived by his children to whom he was a deeply devoted father with the ability to make each of his children feel like they were "the favorite": daughters Wendy L. King (Jenny Andersen), Sandra L. Ross, and son Stephen P. King. Steve's legacy lives on in his grandchildren-Kyle Ross, Kaitlyn Ross, Conner King, and Madison King-whose presence always brought a bright smile to his face. He is also survived by his brother Robert King, Jr. (Gail), and sister Kathleen Curtis (Michael), and was predeceased by siblings Raymond and Joanie King.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at J. Nelson Rigby Funeral Home, 1 W Baltimore Avenue, Media, PA 19063. Interment will immediately follow at Media Cemetery, 40 Kirk Lane, Media, PA 19063.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in memory of Steve be made to Esophageal Cancer Action Network (ECAN) at: https://ecan.org/give-to-save-lives-2/
