I played football with Steve at Fort Hays. Steve was a bruiser fullback. He would make a hole to run thru if there wasn't one.
One day in the off season, I borrowed a motorcycle from a friend, picked up Steve at his apartment and we went to the park south of campus. There was a dry creek bed, so Steve and I would make a run down one bank thru the creek and come up on the side. At first we weren't to speed aggressive, but the faster we drove the higher the jump on the other side. The last jump we made ended our jumping as Steve went so high that when landing we bent the front wheel forks. We panicked, because it was borrowed and I couldn't return it that way.
I knew a guy who was my farm neighbor who had a welding shop in Hays. We went to the shop and Ralph (farm neighbor) straightened the forks and we returned the motor cycle without a word. Luckily he never knew the difference.
When it was over we had some good chuckles.
May Steve Rest in Peace!
