Steven Albini Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Caring Cremations - Chicago on May 10, 2024.

Publish in a newspaper

Steve Albini entered this world on July 22nd, 1962 in Pasadena, CA. He left it by a heart attack May 7th, 2024. He leaves behind a grieving family and many friends and peers; this obituary will try to give the world an idea of the man we're missing. He was the youngest of three by Frank (at the time a grad student at Caltech) and Gina--high school sweethearts from the hardscrabble town of Madera, CA.
Steve played clarinet in grade school. Starting in high school in Missoula, MT, he gravitated toward the emerging punk rock genre, teaching himself the bass to play for the band Just Ducky. This obsession with music led to playing guitar and forming the band Big Black while he attended Northwestern University studying journalism. His journalistic career also started in high school, writing record and concert reviews for the Hellgate Lance. These writings led to his first death threat. He would go on to write essays for various fanzines and music publications, including one called The Problem With Music detailing how musicians benefited very little from the business practices of the recording industry. Go read it. It's epic.
Steve was fearless, willing to speak up about what he cared about and unconcerned about who took offense. This behavior did not always serve his commercial interests, but it gave him a reputation as a man of integrity who could not be bought or bullied in an industry that did a lot of both. Following Big Black he formed the band Rapeman (named after a Japanese comic book and intended to be provocative, but a name he later regretted), and the band Shellac. Starting with his own bands and those of friends, he began to record as a sound engineer. This activity led to a studio in his home in Chicago, which eventually grew into Electrical Audio, a converted commercial building he turned into his dream studio. You can read about all the bands and projects he's been associated with elsewhere; he's not hard to find on the internet. It's a long and storied list.
In 1996 he and his girlfriend (later wife) Heather Whinna began a simple project to help Chicago area families in need. They picked up letters that the post office collected from kids writing to Santa. The requests were for basic necessities, and they were moved to organize friends to donate what they could. They spent every Christmas thereafter delivering gifts to change the lives of the poorest of the poor. This effort grew into an annual 24 hour fundraiser at Second City, which is now a charity known as Letters to Santa, part of Poverty Alleviation Charities in Chicago. All that activity is public, but Steve and Heather are responsible for countless other acts of private generosity. Without going into that list (you know who you are!) your stereotype of a punk rock musician probably doesn't include the beloved uncle who barbecued for the weddings of his nieces and nephews.
The devoted husband who stayed up late to cook for his wife. The studio owner who listed his cats as staff and went deep into debt to keep that staff employed during the pandemic. Host of many stray humans in need of a bed, a meal, a refuge from the cruelties of life. Steve tended to obsess about various projects, master them, and move on. Among these were model rocketry, photography (he worked for a time retouching photos for an ad agency), cooking (he published a food blog, mariobatalivoice, for a time based on the meals he prepared for Heather), woodworking (he made some of the furnishings for the house he and Heather lived in), and of course poker.
Steve won two bracelets at the World Series of Poker and hosted a regular game at his home. Steve was also generous with his time, willing to talk to anyone wanting to follow in his footsteps as a musician or recording engineer. He gave lectures around the world and sat for many interviews, often patiently fielding the same questions but always with a thoughtful answer. His studio hosted many light-hearted but highly technical videos on the science and technology of sound recording and hosted numerous interns looking to learn his craft.
His family is drawing some comfort from the worldwide outpouring of support and affectionate remembrances. We're glad we got to share him with you, and we urge you to go do something generous in his memory.
Steve is survived by his wife of 16 years, Heather Whinna; his mother, Gina; his brother Marty; sister Mona Goldbar; and numerous nieces and nephews who urge you to make a lot of noise in his honor.

I got to meet Steve twice, the first time receiving the only sarcastic handshake I've ever had, the second taking this picture after their 2017 gig at Glasgow SWG3. He mentioned his 'horrible pinky' (hence the pic), but sadly I had to just pretend I got the joke... I had no idea what he meant!

Even from just a few seconds' interaction I came away thinking what a thoroughly nice guy he was. RIP Steve, wish so hard I could experience Shellac again! His shared knowledge remains.

Never personally met him sadly, but his attitude, ethics, and musical works have inspired me so greatly. I fell in love with his music since the moment I first (knowingly) listened to it via "Prayer to God" from Shellac. Later found out I had in fact already unknowingly listened to his work via Pixies and Nirvana. Fantastic person, still a hard to believe loss months later. RIP!

He was a great teacher about the honourable quest for good tone. He could have easily had careers in fine art, politics or journalism. Steve was a highly skilled person whatever he put his mind to. Authenticity that matched the attack and beauty of his music, he was his own tone ringing through life.

Steve, you were pivotal to me in many ways. You opened my eyes (and ears) to a lot of important music, including your own. But more than that, you taught me about integrity and the value of carving one's own path in life; to do what's right and live without fear. I was shocked by your passing and it continues to reverberate in me in ways that I was not prepared for. I am sure it did the same for your loved ones in orders of incomprehensible magnitude and I wish peace upon their hearts. Thank you and I will miss you.

Thank you, Steven, for inspiring me beyond a life of the mundane, rescuing me from a dangerous truck stop in the middle of a hitchhiking adventure, and sharing your loving friendship through a long forgotten PO Box. Never forgotten, forever grateful. All my sympathies to his wife, mother, family and closest friends. HREC

My deepest condolences to Steve's family and friends. You got me through some rough ones Steve. Saw Shellac but couldn't find the nerve to talk to you. Listening to the record that's already sold out everywhere. Perfect period on a long long musical sentence.
Somewhere you're laughing about all this love for the man voted biggest a- hole in more than one indie rag. Happy trails and thanks for the mayo recipe.

I never met Steve Albini but will always be grateful to him for giving our youngest son, JC LeResche, the privilege of working for him as an intern. Steve showed JC many kindnesses & frequently shared his vast & amazing knowledge of sound recording with JC. I loved him for this but also for the fact that his generous and giving spirit went way beyond the Electrical Audio team; it spread to the Chicago community at large. He was an amazing example of giving to all who knew him well & to those with whom he was barely acquainted. We want to extend our deepest sympathies to his family. Vicki LeResche

I knew Steve at Northwestern. We both resided in Bobb Hall. I was on the 4th floor and he was in "The Dungeon" 1st floor as they called it. He played at a few of our coffee house events and on campus. Fast forward to 2007, sitting in a restaurant wearing my Northwestern parka. Two servers there mentioned their favorite band founded by their idol was from Northwestern. I asked who and they said Steve Albini. When I told them I knew Steve and had events with him, they went ballistic. I had no idea at the time he had done so well in his industry, and with such great character. Farwell Steve and condolences to all who knew him well.

I'm 45 and I've been listening to his music since I was in high school. The world lost a true music legend. I guess one great thing about the internet is that I can read all the cool interviews about his cooking and other things he did. He was nice when I saw Shellac in Charlotte all those years ago. God speed dude. I hope I get to meet you again on the other side.

Steve Albini changed the punk rock and music world and my life forever! I wouldn't be the person I am today without his music recording, music creation with his bands Big Black, Rapeman, and Shellac, taste in music, audio/sound and electrical engineering knowledge and education, blue-collar work ethic, life's beliefs, and inspiration. He introduced me to my love and passion for Travis Bean guitars. I was privileged to have met him and spoken with him. We love you Steve Albini and we will miss you forever! Thank you for everything you did and gave to the punk rock music scene and D.I.Y community! R.I.P to one of my heroes and a true Chicago legend. You put a big dent in the universe.

I had the privilege to meet and talk to Steve at a Rachel's show in London. he was incredibly personable, smart and funny. I asked him if he could help me mike up my brothers drum kit for recording-'fax me his kit set up and I'll get back to you.' 3 weeks later I received a fax from Chicago-mike set up,where to buy them etc. My brother still has the fax framed on his wall. Always inspiring and down to earth about it-you are already missed Sir.
My deepest condolences to Heather, his family,Bob & Todd and all the fine folks at Electrical Audio

I got to see Shellac play in a bar in Urbana, Illinois in 1995. Awesome show. Steve played a couple of numbers with the opening band and when he did so, he had a bushy head of hair. When he came out with Shellac after the intermission, he had shaved his head down to a thin mohawk.

"After I was out here before someone told me I looked like Ralph Macchio," he said. "So I found some clippers and shaved my head."

Classic Steve Albini. Rest in peace, Steve. We could all wish to have given even half to the world as you have.

After working and sleeping at EA in 2014, I wanted to get out and explore the city. Steve gave me a list and pointed to a venue that he liked the most. I took his finger pointing as my compass, had a couple of beers and my miracle walked through the door. I met a girl that I instantly fell in love with and guess what? Three years later we got married and we´ve been moving and traveling ever since. You see, his fingers really did create magic in ways that we will never understand.

My deepest condolences to his his beloved wife Heather, family and friends and his bandmates Bob and Todd.

Steve Albini changed the way I listened to music. I was exposed to his engineering brilliance when my dad would blast Surfer Rosa in the house. We wore that album out. The start of the song Cannibal, the beginning of Tweez, will forever get the hair on the back of my neck up. I will miss you, king.

John Scott, The Mark of Cain was one of the bands that supported Big Black when they played Adelaide South Australia in August 1987. The gig was a watershed moment for many Adelaide punters as far as showing how great a band can be performing. Big Black and Steve were a huge influence on us, and after the show Steve offered to help us out anytime for recording if we were ever over his way. In 1992 we recorded with Steve in Chicago. He knew so much about engineering, grounding, noise reduction in circuits, and isolation techniques I assumed he had a bachelor of electronic engineering - but nope, this was all learned knowledge. I was amazed, as I was an electronic engineer and he knew far more than I did. He caught a fly in the studio that was buzzing around, caught it in his hand, and released it into the room I was in playing guitar and said "here´s a friend". It was funny, and relaxed me as I was intimidated having to play in front of him. Later we supported Shellac in Australia and it was always great catching up and finding out what Steve was up to. He explained how he created many of the beginning of songs for the Pixies Surfa Rosa, and stories working with other bands we were find of. We´re devastated that Steve is gone, too soon and far too young. Our condolences to his wife, family, Shellac and friends. We will miss him.

I remember seeing the big black album in the record..u know the one. I couldn't bring myself to buy it, let alone bring it home. Truly just a musical genius. Saw Shellac many times. Not just great music...answering questions..responding to hecklers. Im sure its invited. Truly a art movement all its own. The show at Millennium Park..wow we wow..for those tht were there. Damn..they were gonna tour. Im sad. Will never be forgotten. Todd Trainer and Bob Weston. Truly one of the great trios. I believe that people are put in our lives to inspire and create.

I met Steve a number of times through friends. I can never relate to his family and close friends with their sadness. I am so sorry for your loss. Steve was always polite, kind and insightful. Very intelligent...almost intimidating how smart he was...I wish I knew him better..but I'm glad to be able to say that he touched my life. Be safe and happy wherever life has brought you my friend. God bless and thank you for your contribution our world.
