Steven M. Burk, age 82, a resident of Manitowoc, passed away unexpectedly with his loving wife by his side on Thursday, January 16, 2025 at home.
Steve was born in Algoma on October 30, 1942, the only child of the late Louis and Marie (Mraz) Berkovitz. He became a lifetime corporate pilot after developing an interest in flying at a very young age.
Steve grew up in Manitowoc and graduated from Lincoln High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Tacoma, WA. Following his honorable discharge from the United States Air Force, Steve joined a private flying club where he earned a Pilot's license. He returned to Manitowoc and was hired by Chaplin Aviation, Inc., flying out of Manitowoc and Sheboygan Falls. Steve became a flight instructor for them as well, training many future pilots. One of his trainees turned out to be the love of his life, Jeannine. They married on New Years Eve in 1971. In 1973, he was hired by the H.C. Prange Company as their Chief Corporate Pilot. Steve's continued aviation enthusiasm and proficiency led him to obtain his Lear Jet rating. In 1979, he relocated his family to his hometown of Manitowoc when he was hired by The Manitowoc Company. Steve became their Chief Pilot, and then as flight department manager until his retirement after 30 years of dedicated service. During Steve's remarkable flying career, he transitioned from piston engine turboprops to jet aircraft, managed six pilots and accumulated over 35,000 flying hours – some of which were with his beloved dog, Cara.
In retirement, Steve enjoyed several trips around the country with his wife and family, some camping and often wintered in Gulf Shores, AL. Among Steve's many interests were photography and a love for electronics, which led him to an amateur radio license.
Survivors include Steve's loving wife, Jeannine; daughter and son-in-law, Laura (Mike) Campbell; along with other dear cousins, relatives and friends.
Steve will be remembered for his generosity, never expecting anything in return.
Rest in peace beloved husband and father, until we see you again.
