Steven E. "Steve" Bylund, of Auburn, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2025, after a nearly two-year battle with a rare melanoma that started with what appeared to be a blister on the bottom of his foot.
He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Mary, with whom he shared over 43 years of marriage; his sons Anders and his wife, Meghan, and Rick and his wife, Marie, along with granddaughters Maeve and Ellie, all of Framingham; he also leaves his sister Debbie Fegreus and her husband Bill of Auburn; brothers-in-law Dick Lamby and Anita of Salem, and Christy Lamby and Mary Ellen of Worcester, nephews Scott Swenson and Claire of Auburn, Paul Swenson and Tracey of Webster, nieces Lisa Lamby and Larry of Salem, Hannah and Hailey Swenson of Auburn, and many cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Eric and Joyce, his in-laws Richard and Stasia Lamby, and a niece, Jennifer Lamby.
Steve was born in Worcester and lived all his life in Auburn. He was a graduate of Auburn High, where he was a member of the football and hockey teams, and Assumption College, where he was a member of the hockey team. He received his MBA from Nichols College.
Steve had a 35-year career, including 30 years with Mackinac Savings Bank, as a residential mortgage officer, where he had the privilege to meet and work with thousands of people. He enjoyed playing golf and hockey, and also coached his sons in youth hockey with Midstate Hockey and the Worcester Crusaders. He played hockey for over 35 years in the Worcester Senior Men's Hockey League, joined by his sons in recent years. He continued to play with the Rusty Blades of Worcester up until this spring.
He most enjoyed spending time with Mary and his family and friends. He loved cruising around in his pontoon boats listening to country music on Dark Brook Reservoir and Webster Lake, joined by his extended family at the Makara camp. He was a lifelong fan of the Bruins and Patriots, and enjoyed watching games with family and friends. He particularly loved spending time with his beautiful granddaughters. Although way too short, Steve had a very loving and fulfilled life.
Our family would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Hodi and the care team at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in memory of Steven Bylund to Auburn Youth and Family Services (www.ayfs.org/donate), or to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to support cancer research and patient care: Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284

Sending prayers to Steve's family during this difficult time. I have very fond memories of working with Steve at Mackinac Bank in Auburn; he actually was the one who interviewed me for the job. Steve was a pleasure to work with--always professional, always helpful, and always a gentleman. And every year at Christmas, he passed out bottles of his homemade "glug" which was always a hit with everyone at the office. To Steve's family, I am so very sorry for your loss.

Steve will always be remembered by all who knew him as a NICE GUY! He was always one of the friendliest and kind men anyone could meet. All of us who know him and his family have been extremely fortunate!! He will always be a beloved member of the Auburn Hockey Family and the Assumption College Hockey Family! It has been my good fortune to be able to call him a friend. RIP Steven

I played with Steve in the Auburn Senior men's league for many years and then when he migrated over to play with us on the Rusty Blades. We had more than one 'friendly' exchange of words and sticks over the years. You hated playing against him and loved him as a teammate. Recently one of the guys quipped that we didn't know that he had a real first name. It was always "That friggin Bylund!!" Or words to that effect. Of course it was with hockey affection.
He was a great addition to the Rusty Blades and will be missed.
RIP, Steve.
