Our beloved father and grandfather, Sterling Monroe Bylund, 97, passed away peacefully at his home in Orem on December 19, 2022.
Sterling was born in Santaquin, Utah, on September 30, 1925, to Eric Olaf and Sophia Kirstine Johansen Bylund. He graduated from Lincoln High School. In 1943 during WWII, he enlisted in the Merchant Marines. He spent nearly three years sailing in the South Pacific area.
Sterling was called on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Norway in 1950. He spent three years there and loved the Norwegian people. He never failed to attend the mission reunion every April as long as he could.
When he returned home, he worked for Cloverleaf Dairy (which became Cream O'Weber Dairy) for 33 years before retiring.
He met Janet Kristina Tanner in 1953, and they married in the Manti Temple on September 24, 1954.
In 1993, Sterling and Janet left for a Church mission to the John Johnson home in Hiram, Ohio. They led tours of the home and treasured their time there.
Sterling was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and 13 siblings. He is survived by his five children: Alan (Tessie) Bylund of Provo; Glen (Judy) Bylund of Simi Valley, California; Annette Von Bargen of Lewiston, Idaho; Brent (Julie) Bylund of Highland; and Gary (Teri) Bylund of Provo. He also leaves 13 grandchildren and 8 very beloved great-grandchildren.
He shared his love of the outdoors with any and all who let him. He taught his sons to hunt, and taught all his children and grandchildren to fish. Family and friends have amassed countless memories of camping along the North Fork of the Duchesne River and exploring many places in Southern Utah.
Though he never attended BYU, you could never find a bigger BYU sports fan. He also loved photography and enjoyed sharing his pictures with others. In addition, he was known as the "Candy Man" for giving out Smarties to kids everywhere.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 29, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sharon 1st Ward building, 641 S. 400 E., Orem, Utah. Viewings will be held on Wednesday, December 28, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 E. 800 N. in Orem and on Thursday, December 29, from 9:30–10:30 a.m. at the Sharon 1st Ward building (see address above). The burial will follow at the Santaquin City Cemetery.

Thor Nilsen,

December 29, 2022

Oh how I wished I'd heard of Bylund's passing earlier and could have attended his funeral today. (We always just called him "Bylund." Along with several other missionaries in Norway in 1950 -51, Bylund was in our home in Drammen for many wonderful months, teaching us the Gospel as well as being such a good friend to my family. We all loved Bylund. We emigrated to the U.S. (Utah). He was always involved with our family over here, attending blessings, baptisms, weddings and funerals. He was always such a prankster, full of good humor. I guess he never stopped "fellowshipping" us into the church. I could write a book about his missionary activities and his influence on us, my three brothers, our children, our entire family. Oh how we loved him and his wife. Sending our heartfelt sense of loss.
