Steven L. Ferguson, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at Unity Point Health Trinity-Rock Island, at the age of 81. Steven was born on Saturday, March 27, 1943, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Delbert L. and Marie Elizabeth Dacy Ferguson. He married Rita S. Sedam on September 22, 1990. Steven's life was a testament to the values of hard work, family, and the simple joys of life.
Steven, affectionately known as Steve to his friends and family, was a devoted husband to his loving wife Rita. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter, and their home was always a welcoming place for family and friends. Steve was a proud father to his children, Mark (Terri) Ferguson of Bloomington, IL, Delbert Ferguson of Milan, IL, Brenda (Freddy) Howard of Joy, IL, and Stephanie Ferguson of Joy, IL. He was a doting grandfather to eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy and pride. Steve was the beloved brother of Delbert (Maggie) Ferguson of New Windsor, IL, Ruth Hollander of Denison, IA, and Avis Lower of Aledo, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, twin sons Rodney and Randy, sister Ester Christie, and brother Douglas "Pudd" Ferguson.
Steve's work ethic was unparalleled. He retired early in 2000 after 25 years of dedicated service with General Asphalt, where he was respected by his colleagues for his commitment and friendly demeanor.
An avid outdoorsman, Steve found solace and pleasure in gardening, fishing, hunting, and trapping. He had a special talent for making things grow and enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. Steve also took great pride in keeping a car clean, a task he performed with meticulous care. One of his favorite pastimes and greatest joys was watching his grandchildren play sports, cheering them on from the sidelines with a beaming smile.
Those who knew Steve would describe him as handy and friendly. His hands were rarely still, as he was often found tending to his garden, meticulously maintaining his yard or detailing a car. His friendly nature made him a beloved figure in his community, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Steven L. Ferguson's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with dedication to his family, a passion for the outdoors, and a legacy of kindness. As we say goodbye to Steve, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on in the memories he created with those he loved and the lasting impact he had on his community. Steve's life was a journey well-traveled, and he will be missed dearly by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him.
Steve will be remembered during his funeral service at 11:00 AM Monday, February 10, at the New Boston United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the New Boston Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time of Monday, at the church.
A time of food and fellowship will be held at the church following the committal service at the cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Steven L. Ferguson Memorial Fund.
